I have been using 28.5 gr h4895 with rem cases and Hornady 139 gr bullets for MANY years in my XP-100 and its been a wounderful load.
My problem is that I wanted to try some Nosler Combined Technologies bullets in 140 gr. I have found that using my normal seating setting on my dies that the bullet willnot chamber. To get it to chamber properly in the XP I had to seat the bullet MUCH DEEPER and found that it greatly compresses the load. Whats up with that? why must this bullet be seated so much more deeper and will it hurt to compress the load that much?
Thanks Bob :?

seating

Look at the ogive (curved profile) of the bullet, your seater may contact the bullet in a different place, and not seat it as deeply, or the bullet may be cylindrical for more of its length, and have a more rapid curve to the tip, which would put the larger diameter further up the bore, into the rifling. Every bullet design is different, and the ogive clearance to the rifling is independent of overall length.

seating bullets

this is what i do,, take a fired case from your rifle, slightly compress the neck until it will hold a bullet that you are going to use, note the bullet must be able to move with just a little tension, mix some 5 min epoxy apply a small amount into the neck of the case, just start the bullet and then chamber the round allow the epoxy to harden , then extract it and you have a "try bullet" for that type of bullet ...this will be a seated bullet that will be against the lands.. and will be the max. legnth you can seat.. hope this is of use....jfs

Every time i change bullet manufacture i expect and do change my seating depth.Even more so when changing weight or style.Sometimes even during lot #'s.When changing bullets i always work up a load for that bullet. You may find it takes more or less powder to get the same accuracy. You may even find that bullet wants another powder.Compressing the load will surely change alot of things.
