Here's a trick I'm working on at the range.
The problem is "old eyes" that can focus on one solitary point only! That makes open sights, even peep sights less than perfect.

I picked this up from one of our muzzle loading fans at the club. Since muzzle loaders absolutely are forbidden to use anything except open sights, I thought this may help..............particularly if you are wearing eye-glasses.

Place a strip of electricians tape over the glass lense- just enough to cover a small portion of the eye-glass lense where you view your sights through. Punch a small hole in the center of the tape so the eye looks through that spot when lined up with the sights. This in effect causes your depth of field to be extended so you can see the sights and the target in sharp focus. Experiment with different sized holes in the tape to find the best comprimise of depth of field and amount of light you let through.

Give it a try and let me know what you think. I know someone in the Albany NY region makes a clip-on sighting device with adjustable aperture that works on this principle.

old eyes

First time I heard that, I thought it was a bunch of hogwash. But cheap as it was, I had to try it. Made a believer out of me.

The Merit Disc has been around for years, as have others. The Merit has an adjustable aperture that sticks on your eyeglasses via a suction cup. It works wonders for old eyes. I sometimes use it when I want to do some fine pistol shooting.

That merit disk also works great as a bifocal which would be used even closer than a pistol sight.
If you cant find one of these, try the good advice as posted by savageT.
You can even cup an index finger tightly but leaving a hole between the first & third joints to try this out anywhere from right in front of you to across the room at that small sports score on the television.

There are distributors where you can find the Merit Disc. If you can't locate one you can always get ahold of Merit themselves. They call it a
"Merit Optical Attachment". Their contact info is:

Merit Corporation
Box 9044
Schenectady, NY.
12309
(518) 346-1420
www.meritcorporation.com

Good luck. They are probably the best quality product of this kind.

A lot of the "Mauser Match" shooters at my club use the tape trick. The match rules are iron sights only (no peeps) and most of the shooters are old pharts like me. :)
