The number I can't say but have used more than four 8# jugs of H-110 in a model 83 .454. I bought it new in 1988, a field grade, it went for around $800.00 back then. About two years ago I had a new barrel installed, the forcing cone was eroded quite a bit. Only work that has been needed was a new spring maybe three years back.
I have a 97 in .45 LC that has about 5000 rounds through it. Since I got the 97 in 2000 I don't shoot the 83 much, but lately I don't shoot much at all.
I have only had my model 83 for about two years, this will be my third deer season with it. I just broke a little over a thousand rounds but should have another 300 or so between now and deer season. I like the Hornady 250 grain non magnum XTPs over about 24 grains of AA9. This gives me about 1450+ fps out of a 7.5 inch barrel. Recoil is such that you can stand to shoot quite a bit in a session.
