I know it is early...but I just wondered if the quail in Texas were better, or worse, or what the Texas roadside report said it would be so far this year? I am told by the ranch manager on the place we hunt in South Texas...that he needed a map to FIND the roads.....before he bush-hogged them, and graded them ......all that rain during the year apparently made the underbrush, guayacan, mesquite, cat-claw, huisachillo, and other native plants grow at an incredible rate...so with all that cover, I was hoping the quail had a great brood year...thanks for any info

You are not kidding when you say a map is needed to find the roads. In W. Tx, Ozona, it is grassier than it has been in a number of years. Not sure on quail, heading otu Saturday for whitetail and maybe a turkey or two.

Went out the day after Thanksgiving in far west Texas - 90 miles west of the Big Bend. We didn't see any birds and everything looked exceptionally dry. I also noticed a lot of coyote tracks and feces. I suspect the coyote population is pretty out of control. If that in fact is the case; then I suspect they have had their way with the quail, jack rabbits, and any other small game in the area. I regret not taking my 223 and a couple of calls.

Seeing lots of quail at our Ozona lease, but no turkeys. We did get a fair amount of snow after Thanksgiving. We are going back right after Christmas for whitetail.

Talked to one of the friends I have who owns the land we hunt , says the Turkey and Quail exploded this year...deer herd is healthy , horns are very dark chocolate....( not alot of white tips or white antlered juvenile bucks) ....so it sounds like the ranch is alive and well.......he also said the grass is about chest high in most places that have not seen a bush-hog....( which is about 95 %) of the 20,000 acres....so I know snake chaps are in order.....speaking of which .......anyone seen any "extra snakes"......from all the good rain and heavier than normal cover ????
