To answer your second question first. If I could have only one handgun for both purposes it would be my 4" Colt Python. The main big game here is Whitetail deer with a few hogs and Black Bear. The only place to hunt the latter two in my area (that I have access to) is on WMA's in conjuction with a firearms deer hunt. Now if two handguns were allowed I'll take my Sig P245 for defense and the TC Contender with a lot of barrels. Yes I know that is kind of cheating but only the frame is considered a firearm by the ATF.

A GREAT question indeed. The one that I would choose for hunting and not look back is the Ruger Vaquero, blued, five and a half inch barrel in .45 Long Colt. This cartridge is very flexible! It can be loaded to approximate the 44 magnum with less recoil and pressure. It can in its factory loads be used for plinking, target practice, etc. The one that I would choose for self defense is the VERY SAME gun! Why? For the reasons mentioned PLUS it is a wheelgun, and therefore less likely to jam. I didn't say it is not guaranteed to malfunction, but it is undeniably less likely to do so. Under the pressure of a self defence situation, dependability is an absolute necessity. My second choice as a self defense handgun is the CZ 97B, .45 ACP. It is a rather large pistol, but it is very reliable , and extremely accurate! The weight helps with controlability, and having large hands, I have no difficulty with gripping it.

Kindest regards,
Rifle Man

For hunting there's my .41mag Bisley, for defence I prefer my Kimber Pro Carry. Now to choose just one while considering versatility, portability, and power I would have to choose my M29 MG.

Hunting: S&W M29. What a versatile revolver and caliber.
Personal Defense: Glock 21 (.45 ACP). It's ugly and unstoppable.
And after a century or so of fiddling around,
modern science has yet to come up with a clearly
superior personal defense cartridge (sez me,
anyway).

Just One Pistol? S&W M29. Burglars to big game.

Two guns:
FA M97 with a 5.5" octagon barrel in .45 LC/ACP?
FA M97 with a 5.5" octagon barrel in .22 LR/WMR

One gun:
FA M97 with a 5.5" octagon barrel in .45 LC

I'm kinda on an FA kick

Perish the thought!

For defense, I would carry my Colt Combat Commander in .45ACP. It's been tuned up by the 'Smithy at Gunsite and has 8,000 rounds through it without a bobble.

For hunting, I'd carry my .475Linebaugh built on a Ruger Bisley. Good for whatever I care to hunt.

For just one gun, I'd go with my 4inch S&W 657 in .41Magnum. I'd use my usual load of a 250gr.WFNGC ahead of a sizable dollop of W296. Not as slim as my Colt, but packs pretty easy just the same. RKBA! 8)

One gun or two for hunting and self defence I would choose just one. A 12 gauge pump with a long barrel and a 3 inch chamber. It is the MOST versatile weapon in any arsenal. It can be loaded light - with shot it is great for small game, when loaded heavier it is good for self defence birds and medium size game, and loaded hot with slugs it is good for any size animal in North America at close range.

Well I would say my Encore for both..... :) What you say, both ya.......that's what I said. For carry it would be a custom barrel 6" chambered in 45Win Mag with nite-sites.For hunting a 15" barrel in '06 or 444 Marlin. Why the Encore all you need are diff. barrels and it will do anything you need it to do :D

Hunting: T/C Contender (in 44 Mag if you limit me to one barrel)
Defense: S&W 624 44 Special (cause I traded off a Redhawk 44 Mag for it)

One for both: S&W 624

For hunting, a scoped .44 Bisley.
For protection Glock 21 with 14 rounds of .45 ACP.

If reduced to one: 4" Colt Anaconda. Not the #1 choice for either situation, but the best combination of the two.

Only 2 guns for..........

If I were limited to only two guns for Hunting & Self/Family Defense:
1)FA .454 w/Leupold 2X scope - Hunting.
2)Wild West Guns "Wolverine" .454,.45Colt,.45ACP - Self/Family defense.

Only one handgun to do it all:
WWG "Wolverine" 4" brl. that shoots .454, .45 Colt, and .45ACP! It's Powerful, Packable, Practical, & VERSITAL!

Two Guns, One Gun...

For hunting, my Winchester 94 Trapper in 357 Magnum, works for deer sized game just fine. Handgun, my Ruger GP100 (KGP141) 4", stainless, 357 Magnum. Self Defense Gun? The same Ruger GP100. 357 Magnum is a great self defense round and the GP100 is plenty tough to stand up under years of hard use and many thousands of rounds. Ruger makes one heck of a good gun.
