Hey guys,

I guess I should let you know who I am if you don't know. My name is Greg, the call is ke4ooo and I am an Advanced class ticket holder. I have been a Ham for awhile now, mostly I do PSK, RTTY, APRS and AM. I like radios that glow in the dark for some reason, not sure why ;D must be that they keep me warm in the winter! If you have questions let me know, if I don't know the answer I will try to look it up. Most of the time I am found beating my head on the desk working 6m and waiting for the sun spot count to climb.

two 80 foot towers
Hey Greg: Welcome to the forum. I've been reading your posts on Graybeards Topic. 80 foot towers! That's gettin away up there guy, be careful. I'm just about ready to string up a dipole a little over 30 foot high. I'm going the inexpensive route. A tall young Elm tree and a used Utility pole.

As ozark stated, I'm new at this hobby. I'm game, but kinda old and rusty, and this soldering coax connectins, well, as anythilng else, it takes some practice to get it right.

The weather is finally cooperating, so if all goes right, I'll have that 80meter antenna up shortly. I do a lot of listening, and not much talking on HF. What with a little hearing loss on top of being new to the ham language, I get lockjaw and tongue-tied, trying to comprehend everything. In short it scares me.... ;D ;D

Larry,

Yea 80 foot is a big tower, it might just get me out over the hills in my area ;D ;D Don't be afraid, we all had to start somewhere. As for the hearing problem, I wear headphones when I can, it really helps me to hear stuff that I would normally miss out there.

You guys are right. I had to do something in that line, as I couldn't make out hide nor hair of the call-signs coming across the airwaves. I have 3 pair of Stereo headphones but they don't cut the mustard when it comes to this kind of reception. :p
So, it wasn't too long that I began searching for a good headset. 8)
Out of 3 brands of headsets : 1. Japan ST-3 2. KOSS QZ Pro 3. Kenwood Hs 5[/color] ....... I chose the Kenwoods. I must say they do make it easier pulling out those call letters. :D

4B,
Are you a member of a local club? We have a Sunday morning rag chew on 10m just to get people on the air and talking on HF. Do you have a rig that you can install notch filters in? They help cut down on the hiss and weak signals. Then again go for the digital mode and have fun with them. My hearing is not the best so I play a lot on PSK, RTTY and many others as well.

Cool on having a 80 tower, I have 120 feet of R25g on the ground and will be putting up 50 feet of it with a 10 thru 40m quad. That should be a blast with all that gain. HI.

It is a two element quad. It works more like a beam then the one you are looking at. Just like the ones you see for UHF and VHF. I do have the antenna setting in the shop so it will be just put it all back together and make things work. There is a ham about an hour’s drive from here that has a 4 element quad for 80 m and just blows every one away when he is QRP ;D
