Sorry that I haven't been around for a while. We left for the SHOT show in Orlando on the 10th and got back yesterday. Had a good time and saw lots of neat new hunting products. But I have to leave again tommorrow as we are taking 10 kids hunting for exotic rams out near Camp Verde. Will check back in when I get back.

Hunt Report

Though it was a little wet, we had a good hunt for the kids. All but one of them harvested the animal of their choice. This poor young man couldn't hit the targets with any of the guns we tried; .223, .22-250, 6.5x55, .7mm-08 and a .243. After getting the young man away from his mother and talking to him, my range master finally determined that his mother had installed a severe case of gun fear in him and we weren't going to be able to reverse it in the 3 days we had for the hunt. He even had trouble with the .22 rifles we had. I felt sorry for him because he just could not hit the targets so I couldn't let him try for an animal. It would not have been fair to the animal or ethical. Fortunately, he lives in Austin near one of my shooting instructors and they have agreed to get together for some shooting sessions. I told him that if he worked at it and improved to the point that we felt it would be safe for him to trying harvesting an animal I would get him on another of my youth hunts scheduled for later this year. Hopefully that will be enough incentive for him. Well gotta go to work.

Hey Denvas

how disappointing, and yet I think you did the only thing you could. What had his mother done to him to mess him up? Suprised that she even would allow him to come out at all. Was she just not familiar with firearms her self? Sounds like the other kids had a great time though.

Just got back and getting ready to go out a

I believe the mom was the typical one parent family and besides having no experience guns or hunting, was on of those over protective types. For example, she didn't allow him to play sports because they were too rough for her baby. This boy was recommended for the hunt by his pastor who felt that he needed some more adventureous activities. We sat down with mom and have convinced her to let her son try the shooting sports out. If he likes shooting then she will let him try hunting again. As I mentioned earlier they live near one of my shooting instructors so they have someone to work with them. Any way the ball is in their court, we have done what we can.
