The Smiths use the stock as apart of the action. Wood collapse alters special relationships and they get squirrely. The photos are great. I use the wire method to relieve spring tension on the top lever spring. The use of a box end wrench to cock the hammers is a great idea. There is little supporting wood to carry recoil to the butt and these regularly fail. The tang makes a great splitting wedge. I hog out the 4 fingers of wood that carry the energy and fill with glass fibers bedded in epoxy. The feather weights and 410's are the worst..
