My 'coon' line is still runnin....but Im havin trouble.
Iv been making pocket sets (on drounder wires) like the ones in TRAPPERS WORLD MAY/JUNE 2002, (P.35) I have baited with sardines and have used some fish oil and sometimes a sweet coon lure along with the sardines. There are coon there...tracks are present...have had several snaped traps though...BUT, I have caught everything else!! I have caught a mink by the rear leg...several 'rats (some front leg, some rear) a beaver by the front...and today an OTTER by the front!!

I also found a log crossing that arches over the river...made 2 dirtholes on each side...today both sets had been worked...sparrow for bait was dug out and fox tracks were all over...it looked like dirt had been dug out and pushed on top of trap. SO, I brushed dirt off set till i could see pan...made sure dirt wasent under the pan, put op small side ridges and a little more dirt in front of hole...the pan is the lowest and smoothest spot at the set...re baited both with more sparrows, lure and fox P. Ill get that fox.

Anyway, why aint I catchin the coon? Dont get me wrong...I like otters! but I dont like being outsmarted.
thanks fer listenin...

Not to hard to figure out. 1) incidentals are taking up trap "space" and coon don't run every night. 2) when coon are working your sets they are snapped because you aren't doing one thing- using a guide stick next to the dog tight to the outside jaw. cuts snapped water traps down to almost nothing.....t'man.

Dirt Hole

Try a few dirt hole sets 2-3' from the bank and bait them with sardines. I've had good luck with the trap about 3-4"in front of the hole and use guide sticks to force the coon to come directly from the front of the hole. I'd rather have an otter than 5-6 coons personally :)

Thanks fellers

Appreciate the info boys...specially your lenghtly replys X2 Jim.
Ill figure it out eventually. I made some 120/box sets this afternoon in an abandoned old farmhouse for some coon that are annoying the landowner...maybe they will pan-out. I couldent help but to put a few sets near the big brush pile out back and a few more in the bean field ajoining it...Cant wait till morning...
Thanks
