long or short?
Hi, LaRell!
There is no such thing as a "stupid question".
If your .22-250 is factory orginal, it is a "short action".
Manufacturers designate bolt action lengths by the family of cartridges they are designed for. The .308 Winchester, .243 Win, .22-50, etc are based on the .308 Win case length of just under 2.0 inch cases. This also covers the .223 Remington class of cartridges.
The "standard" or Magnum category includes .30-06, .270 Winchester, and the standard belted Magnum series (.300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, .338 Win Mag, 458 Magnum, etc) of cases of appx 2.5" length.
There are also "Large Magnum" length actions to hold the very longest and largest of the popular factory cartridges.
To summarize: factory bolt actions differ about 1/2" in length from each family of cartridges to the next.
