Painful recoil can be mitigated easily with a nice soft limbsaver pad.....if that doesn't get you there a properly built brake will eliminate the rest and also increase accuracy.....the majority of brakes on the market work very well at reducing recoil, but at the expense of more cuncussion to the shooter and more perceived noise......a properly built (most brakes are not due to higher cost, probably pennies) brake does wonders......I can make an 8# 300 win mag pleasant for a kid to shoot.....my son has been shooting "big kickers" since he was 10, and he does not like recoil or muzzle blast.......300 win, 44-06, 375 jdj (6# contender carbine), '94 win 444 marlin, 300 RUM....the only one we load down is the 444 because i'm just not going to thread it for a brake and the limbsaver pad gets rid of the bite.
