Been thinking seriously of purchasing one of the dwindling supply of GMP Garands. (Yes, already a member of a qualifying club, shot in a qualifying match, got the necessary paperwork, etc. )

Unfortunately, from what I have read on other threads... the good ones are all but gone. Some service grades returned from Greece remain.

However... of the ones that remain:

1) Is the problem typically a poor barrel? However, what is the condition of the action/receiver? Is it typically still in good working order?
For the barrel, what is considered to be poor / good?
1a) If it's the barrel - how much would I expect to pay to get a new barrel?

2) Is the finish typically in bad condition? And if so, how much would I pay to get it re-parkerized?

3) The wood seems easy enough to refinish - if necessary. Otherwise it would appear I can get some new wood for under $100.

4) What other parts typically require replacement?

In the end, I can purchase a "new" Garand from Springfield Armory for about $1200. I heard there were some quality issues before, but I do not know now. I do know they offer a lifetime warrantee with that weapon if something goes wrong (quality wise).

If I purchase a service grade for about $600 (total cost to my door), how much more would I be looking at to "fix it up", if any at all?

Thanks! :D :D

Yukon gold a buddy of mine just recieved his rack grade greek g8un a month ago and surprisingly enough it is nice the stocks needed a little refinishing but otherwise is nice but if your expecting a truly beautiful piece well its a used rifle and if go to a gun show you've most likely seen 800.00 Garands going for 600.00 or better that don't look half as good, at least the ones comming from the Cmp are looked , at parts replaced and most are funtion tested thats were you get quality his greek rifle was nice and he places it with pride right next to his natioal match Garand , his Danish garand and "03a3 and'03 so order one and see for your self they are NICE. bb75

CMP rack grades are re-sold for $950 here in Central California. It is a small time business for some in this area.
