I am considering a Deerstalker for black bear. Oregon coastal hunting is brushy and close shooting, thus I thought the short barrel of the Deerstalker makes sense. Prices seem to run $240 for blued or $320 for stainless. While stainless is not too traditional, would it be worth the extra $$?

If you can afford the SS, its much easier to keep in nice condition along that rainy coast. I have 2 SS ML's and one regular Blued.

I agree with Smokepolehall, if you can afford the SS then invest in that one. Like he said, it will be much easier keeping it looking nice. Besides, thats a sharp looking rifle in SS anyhow.

How do you like your Deerstalker's smokepolehall? I was thinking of getting one for my fiance. .54per

I have 2 SS mL's but neither are the Lyman Deerstalkers. I have a T/C Grey Hawk SS And Their Blk. Dia. XR SS. That being said i do have a friend with The Lyman Deerstalker and he is happy with it.

Thanks for the opinions. My initial thought was that the SS would be better, just not a traditional looking, but then it gives me incentive to also find a GPR.

I used a Lyman Deerstalker for the past 16 years and found it to be a great hunting rifle. If you want to shoot bullets, go with the .50. If you want to use round balls go with a .54. As far as the stainless goes, I don't like the look of it, but get what you like. Have fun

Interested in Snowshoes comments about a 50 for bullets and a 54 for round ball. Guess I would have thought a 54 with bullets would be decisive bear medicine.

Break down, the 50 has at least 4 bullets/conicals to 1 fer the 54. Lots more choices to pick and choose from. If using just a prb the 54 is the more power cal. The 50 cal is is yer everyday use cal. Now the 50 is plenty powerful!
