I'm seriously considering ordering a .280 Rem Handi as my next rifle both because I like the idea of a .270-performing rifle in the 7mm cal and because the 26" barrel really gets me interested.
The price is also hard to argue with.
But, after reading some of the posts I'm unsure. :|
I already handload so that isn't an issue but can I expect MOA or sub-MOA performance from these rifles if I fine tune my loads or am I unlikely to be able to do this?
Also, is it safe to load to .270 pressures when 280 Rem is usually loaded a little lower?
I'd appreciate any hints on these questions.

take a look at the topic i just made its called " 308 range report" and look at the poll about the accuracy that quick made . these things can shoot you just have to know how to play with them. the 308 that i did the shooting with was, by its first owner, sold because "it wont shoot good" sure does shoot good now.

I don't know if the 280 is loaded lower or not,but mine chrono's 2975fps with the Rem. corlokts 150 gr.. Mine shoots 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 " all day long every day with the same ammo. Its far and away my favorite go to gun and it gets used alot. I hav'nt worked up any serious loads for it yet but the probabilty that it would shoot sub 1" is there. It shoots factory ammo better than any handi caliber I have. If you buy one that shoots sub 1" it would'nt hurt to buy a lotto ticket the same day because you luck is very good that day.  Digger

Both my handi rifles shoot very good and are sub moa after doing some work. Before that they were 1 to 1.75 groups. Also my rifles shot better after 200 rounds in conjunction with free floating. I was interested in the handi rifle because I wanted to hunt with a single shot. I also like the way they feel, look and I can buy more barrels. Did I have to do a little work? uhmm not really because free floating was no biggy. Did I play with them alot? Sure do every week I shoot and its fun. Besides you can get alot of help from the good people here.

Yes, well, we all know what you're like, don't we....... :p
In all reality it'll probably happen just after Christmas because I promised my wife I wouldn't buy another gun for 6 months. :?
Does give me time to save up.
I have my mind on another possible purchse but to be honest the .280 is a less fuss alternative, in some ways that is.
I'd still have to score the cases & dies for it though and that would be the interesting.
My other option I already have dies for and cases are super cheap......but it isn't as high powered as the .280 and scoping it would be troublesome. :?
Perhaps I should put that one off to the next purchase. :|
Afterall, there's always the next purchase.....

Any gun that can take 270 pressures in 270 can take 270 pressures in a 280 chamber. The Remington autoloader (740?) was not offered in 270 in the 1950's because it didn't like the pressure. If the Handi couldn't take the pressure, there wouldn't be 308 and 270 barrels for it.

That's the good thing about my birthday and Christmas being evenly spaced. My wife doesn't have to think about what to get me.

She is yet to be convinced this is a good plan. :-D
