I have a guy wanting to sell me a Winchester Model 12 for $275. It is a 16 gauge pump and it has a polychoke on the barrel.

Is this a good price?
Can the poly choke be removed?
How much would a replacement barrel cost?

I can not stand seeing a poly choke.
Personally I would pass. I much prefer the 12 ga over the 16 and then there is that ugly choke.

I would prefer that someone round up all those guys who ruined modified model 12s with polychokes (that they would then set to modified) and make them shoot mossbergs.

To answer your question, it's probably a fair deal, you didn't tell us the condition of the gun or any other factors about it. The polychoke cannot be removed other than cutting the barrel, and then you have no choke at all. I have no idea what the cost of a 16ga barrel would be. The 16s are worth more than the 12s, and you don't see a lot of spare barrels in good condition. Then the ones you see are blown out, full choke, or have a polychoke of their own.

If you would cut the poly off the barrel, you could at no small expense, have screw in chokes installed

I've been told that you need to start with the thicker 3" barrel to have the screw in chokes installed.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm kinda disappointed. I am a 16 gauge guy, owning a Winchester 37, rem 1100 and a browning sweet 16 this would have been my first model 12. The poly choke ruined it for me.
