Smitty,

Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, Weatherby is the only current company that manufactures rifles in the .338-06. Your only other option is to either look around for used rifles, or, have one custom built.

I agree with your assessment of the 338-06. I personally own a .338 Win. Mag with a muzzle brake, which thus has increadible power and kicks less than a .270, but a 338-06, even without a muzzle brake, would make a great rifle for just about anything in North America. It is not really a flat shooting rifle - so forget about antelope hunting out west with shots at 400 yards, but it's great for just about everything within about 200 yards.

Zachery you are right about the 338-06 not being a 400 yard Antelope gun. But use Noslers 180 BT and its everybit a 300 yard gun and in my experience it's darn close to a 400 yard gun. Here's notes from database which I have posted before.

8/29/99 Three rounds fired to check extraction and expansion qualities and group size . Test firing needed. 8/30/99 5 three shot groups fired Good groups, average .775. sight 2.5 inches high 100 yards. 11/09/1999 WT doe, 435 yds, LRF, DW&JO. broadside, held top of back. through and through, chest, clipped arteries from top of heart. Minimal meat damage 10/22/00 WT buck, 80 yds,DW&JO. running 1/4 away, held center front shoulder, through and through, hit behind left shoulder, exit between neck and Rtf shoulder, minimal damage. 10/23/00 WT doe 385, LRF, DW, broadside, hold top of back, through and through front shoulder. rt shoulder minimal, left, exit shoulder destroyed
LRF laser range finder. DW&JO are my two hunting partners

338-06

I just picked up a Custom Remington 700 in 338-06 with a 24 inch Douglas air-gauge barrel and a KDF brake. I have not had a chance to shoot it yet but I did pick up some Weatherby factory loaded 210 Noslers. A-Square also offers 3 factory loadings @ $53 a box. I was told it recoils like a 243 with the brake, but it is EXTREAMLLY loud. It will shoot an inch if I do my part. On paper this sounds like a great cartridge. I guess all the gun manufacturers are tied up with the short magnums to concern themselves with this cartridge. I do hope some one starts to load for it.(Federal-Hornady-Winchester-Remington are you listening??)

Tim,

Just out of curiosity, does your gun have a Fagen laminated stock? I once saw a custom 338-06 for sale on gunbroker. It also had a blued 700 ADL action. Just curious if you bought it. If you did, what a small world this is.

338-06

Zach,
I did get this of GunBroker but it has the standard Remington ADL wood stock. Maybe the fellow sold the stock & relisted the rifle. I am thinking about replacing the standard wood stock with a Synthetic ADL take-off. I just do not want to open a can of worms with bedding & barrel channel issues ect.....

I remember that this gun was listed for well over 3 months, maybe more. Last I remember it had a buy-it-now price of $800, but that was with the laminated stock. Is that how much you paid for it without the laminated stock?

Can any of you familiar with the 338-06 tell me of any advantages over the regular 30-06 with equal grain bullets? Im interested in this caliber but dont want the recoil of the 338 mag.
