 I know this question just screams rookie, but why does a wider ring go on the front of a rifle and a narrower one on the back? And do all manufacturers make their scope rings to do this? I also find it interesting that ring manufacturers do not tell you on the package which ring should go where . . . like the Leopolds I just purchased.

I don't buy a lot of different brands of rings but I have never seen a set that were different widths between the two rings. What brand are you looking at? KN

These rings are for a Sako, so there is no add on base that you would have to attach. But the base of the rings (that would mount on a base ) are two different widths. I asked around and was told that the wider based ring goes on the front mount and the narrower on the rear mount. These are Leopold rings. :?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with Sako rings. If you mean one base is thicker as one rings sits higher above the reciever like a Ruger 77, look at the reciever and see which reciever ring is higher. The lower one goes on that one. If you mean wider, email Leupold and get an answer is my suggestion. If one ring is wider so it's windage adjustable then it goes in the back.
