Here's the story:

I was after a squirrel the other day with my RWS 350. I was able to sneak within 15yds. or so of it, and let an 8.3gr. RWS Superdome loose at about 975 f.p.s. MV. I tried for a head shot, but the pellet ended up hitting the shoulder area instead (had switched over to iron sights).

It was knocked off it's feet definitely, but what got me thinking was that it did not penetrate. I recovered the pellet because it literally bounced or was glanced off track due to the shoulder bone. I was able to administer a quick finisher shot, but I don't like having to do that. I want my pellets to do what their supposed to do the first time: penetrate, expand, and offer a quick humane death for the critters.

I'm thinking of switching to either a sharper-angled dome pellet, or going to an equivalent weight pointed pellet. What do you suggest?

Heres what you should do-
First, try a number of different pellets to see which ones shoot most accurately in your gun.
Try some heavier pellets. That gun should handle 10+gr pellets easily.
Do some more shooting with the open sights and make sure they are zeroed properly, and practice a lot.
Pointed pellets are usually not as accurate as domes, especially at longer ranges. Domed pellets also seem to retain more energy at range than points.
Learn the kill zones for whatever you are hunting. The brain in a squirrel is a small target, the heart/lung area is somewhat larger and just as effective.

Thanks for the tips, dave. Looks like I will have to try out one of those pellet samplers from Straight Shooters. Got the list compiled, just have to get around to sending it.

Is there any place I can look on the web to search for a qualified "airgun smith" in my area? It would help for whenever I need to have it checked, tuned, relubed, etc.

Patriot,

Good points from "dave". The one thing I don't understand is the 975 f.p.s. with a 8.3 g. pellet out of your RWS 350M? My son in-laws .22 350M gets that much. Lawdog
