Hay fellow charcoal burners,

As usual after the last match I didn't bother to soak my Magtech hulls and other brass, so I proceeded with the cleaning process a day later. I ain't finicky at all, but after shakin' them hulls in soapy water I usually add a vinegar rinse before settin' them out in the sun. Well, no cider vinegar and I wasn't going to use my balsamic. Next to the sink I spotted a purple spray bottle that Discouraging Word had lately bought, and I noticed that she'd peeled the chrome off the tub faucets with it, so I sprayed my cases with

* KABOOM! *

(active ingredients? Organic salt and surfactants, whatever they are). Name seems appropriate fer our sport. It was like dippin' an old penny in Nitric Acid, anything that strong has got to be bad for ya, but they sure brightened that brass up quick!

Thought ya'd like to know.

Howdy Goatlips,
That sounds like a great product and it might cut down on time to clean cases in a vibratory cleaner too.
I have questions though. How long would you soak your cases and what about rinsing? Any chance the cleaner would actually weaken a case like some other products do?
I make a mess of my cases on BP, especially 45lc. I would more than welcome something that would clean them up real well. This sounds almost too good to be true, but I am going to get my wife Heide Doody to see if she can find some and I will do my usual testing with it.
Thanks for the heads up pard. :)

Hay Howdy Pard,

I jus' drained my big plastic jar fulla brass and rinsed the soap off like always, then sprayed the drippy hulls with about ten shots of KABOOM and agitated them again, I figger the water to spray ratio was about ten to one, real weak, and watched 'em turn bright right quick, and rinsed.

I did dig out some brass shotgun hulls and rubbed 'em with a scrub sponge to get into the head groove which worked fine too; when my hands started to feel like I shoulda worn rubber gloves, I quit. Don't think the brass got hurt any.

Thanks fer yer interest. Now somebody'll change the name and sell it in the Chronicle fer big pesos...

Goatlips, strong point. Marketing. I can see the label now. Evil Roys picture and the title Cowboy brass cleaner.
Might as well capitalize ya know. Seems all the powder manufacturers have relabled and gone with that. I.E. Goex cowboy looks suspiciously like their old cartridge grade and now the Pinnacle looks like it is dyed black APP and on and on. Get it while it's hot is the thing. I am getting some Kaboom before the price triples.

Goatlips, muchas gracias mi amigo.

I got Heidi Doody to get me some of the Kaboom. She got me a nice big purple spray bottle of the stuff.
Today I was able to try it out. First I spotted a really decrepit looking 45-70 case I am saving to make a screwdriver out of and it was really stained and dirty. I sprayed it with a bit of the Kaboom and rubbed it around with a shop rag and I could not believe my eyes. Bright and shiney. The stains I can still make out, but they are so light they are of no consequence. I have bought new brass that looked worse in the bag. Satisfied so far. I had a can of 45 brass that I had brought home from the range in my usual dishsoap and water jug. I had rinsed the brass and dried it and it is ready for the vibrator. I dumped the stuff back into the jug and sprayed about 12-15 shots of Kaboom in there and added some water. Shook the jug and set it down for a few minutes while i answered the phone. I came back to it, rinsed twice and I could see this brass was looking extremely good. I finished off with a bake in the sun and I just went out and brought it in. This brass looks so clean inside and out that there is no need to tumble in media at all. I'll just load it up.
Pard, every so often someone discovers something to make BP shooting easier and you found that something. It has been a long time since I have been so pleasantly surprised by something that works. I thank you.
Now, I hope this doesn't get around to fast before I get a big supply stored up. I might try Costco.
Tumbling brass seems to now be a thing of the past. Yehawwww. I can only imagine how it will be on things like truck wheels and stuff like that. :) :D

OK, I shot saturday and sunday. I threw my cartridges into a jug with water a dash of dawn dish soap and about a dozen squirts of Kaboom. I rised the brass three times when I got home and left in the sun to dry.
Today I loaded the brass back up with out tumbling and the brass looks just great.
Now our old pard Snakebite and I traded some ammo to try out. He gave me some nickle cases and they were not heavy crimped and had smokey blowby on them. The nickle didn't clean up very well and I will have to tumble them.
So, my conclusion is that with brass cases the inside and out cleans up great with just the Kaboom. Nickle will have to be tumbled too. Fortunately I don't shoot nickle, so I am very pleased with the Kaboom. Odd that it didn't do much on the nickle. Not having to tumble saves me some time. I spent that time today pan lubing bullets.

I just stumbled across this post so I don't know if there's been some follow up to the KABOOM idea in other places. However a quick check of "organic salts" on a search engine pulled up an alphabetical list of compounds. Right at the top of that list was a section of compounds that all started with the word 'ammonium'. Ammonia and brass don't enjoy a good working relationship. I would really investigate this before I dumped expensive cases into a solution containing unspecified organic salts. If there have been follow ups on this and I'm seriously out of step with the latest info just ignore me. It'll make me feel right at home. Better yet bring me up to speed. Maybe a chemist could take a shot (pun intended) at this .

Whistlepig, I took a look at the bottle. Of course they only listed what they have to for ingrediants, but it reads organic salt, surfactants and fragrance. No phosphorus. So, you are correct sir.
I know ammonia eats away at brass, but I have cleaned some of this brass half a dozen times with the diluted Kaboom, Dawn and water mix. I inspect the brass closely and see no erosion and certainly no case splitting so far.
You might have noticed that I had poor results on nickle cases with the stuff and since you prompted me to actually read the label, I think I now know why. The label says not to use on things like frosted glass, aluminum and galvanized metal. I take it that means plated metal ie: nickle then, and that is why it doesn't do much for nickle.
Anyway, I am still using my little formula, since I only shoot BP and I have to stick fired cases in water and something while at a match and for the trip home.
You can bet that if I find something about it that is detrimental, I will let everyone know.
