I am a little new to the Contenders, I have a 30/30 14 inch and a 223 14 Inch. I see you can get 21 inch barrels for them and convert to rifle with a rifle stock. If you put a 21 inch barrel on the frame and leave the pistol grip, is it legal? Or do you have to stay with a barrel less than 16 inches?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum !
I am not a attorney , I do not play one on TV . You may wish to consult one prior to using any of my advice .
Never put a pistol barrel on with rifle stock and never put a rifle barrel on with a pistol stock . Never turn a gun that left the factory as a rifle into a pistol . Since you are also in So. Cal you should also know that you can only import in this state a very limited number of commertive model contenders into the state and need to refer to the curio and relic list at the doj. The only legal means to get a contender pistol is to find one that left the factory as a pistol and was regestered in CA prior to the drop test B.S.

"Check your local laws." But here in Delaware a pistol barrel can be any length. The restriction is on the rifle barrel length. 18.5 inch barrel length minimal. I think that is Federal.

Check your local laws is good advice. The Federal minimum barrel length for rifles is 16", but some states may have a higher limit. There is also a minimum overall length for rifles, but I don't know what it is. There is no Federal limit on the length of a pistol barrel, so you can have a pistol with as long a barrel as you wish, but, again, there may be state law problems. Check your state laws.

I know the federal limit is 16 inch or more for a rifle and a overall length of 26 inch and a rifle action is ALWAYS a rifle so you can not put a pistol barrel on it. With the Contender being a pistol with interchangable barrels and carbine coversions available, I know you can not use a carbine butt stock with a pistol barrel, but I am unsure if you can use the rifle barrel with the pistol grip. I called the DOJ and they will not give a answere to this question. There statement is: We do not interpert the law, only enforce it. ??? :( Never have received any help from those people!
Contenders can not be brought into this state as they are not on the " list " I fortunally bought these from a friend who had them before the law or I would never have gotten them

After reading through the regs, it looks like I can put any lenght barrel on the pistol frame as long as it does NOT have the carbine stock attached. If the carbine stock is attached the barrel HAS to be 16 inches or longer.
Thanks to all who answered
