well, this morning i made the while flipping channels i stopped on " A River Runs Through It". big mistake. i was going fishing this afternoon and while i was at Canadian Tire grabbing some gear i thought "why not" and picked up on of the cheap fly fishing starter kits. i was fishing stocked trout ponds way back in the bush, so i tried flies, but my girlfriend thought i was nuts so she stuck with worms. i spooled the line, used some sort of crude knot to attach the leader and tied on some sort of cheap flie i picked up that came in a pack of 12 for $3. when i tried casting i was surprised i was actually able to get it out 15-20 feet, but in waving it back and forth i made a tangled birds nest out of the leader. so i cheated. i cut the line above the leader, and tied on a small snelled hook with a chunk of nightcrawler. lobbed it out about 10 feet and it wasn't long before i had a bite. from the way the rod bended i thought it must be huge, but it was a little 5 inch speckled trout, beautiful fish but it swallowed the hook and i inadvertantly killed it trying to get it out. :( 10 minutes later i caught another speck, bit bigger and the same thing happened, so i decided to call it quits. i don't like killing fish i intend to release, so i need a pair of forceps, or something a little more delicate then needle nose pliers. i loved the feel of fighting fish on light tackle, i think i'm hooked!

IMO, the next thing you will need to pick up is a video on basic casting and spend some time practicing. It won't take long to get the basics figured out and you will love it once you do. I started out with a 6 weight outfit and now I've expanded to 2, 4, 6, and 9. It is addictive and it does put a lot more fight in the fish.

uh oh. i'm looking at the Cabela's fly fishing catalogue and i see many things i didn't know existed but now must have. great another expensive addiction to spend money i don't have on. yeah, i plan to get a book or video on the basics, and to replace the cheap line and leader that came with the kit. if i use it a lot i'll probably replace the reel for a better quality one before to long. a lot of the local shops don't carry to much fly gear so i think i'll have mailorder or maybe try my hand at tying my own. don't know about that, i still haven't purchased all my reloading gear, and that takes priority.

stupid Robert Redford movies. I nearly bought a Hawkens after the last time i watched "Jeremiah Johnson" :)
