It's time for Marlin to retire the 35 Remington and re-tool for the new S&W .50-caliber magnum.

Why would they retool for the 500S&W.When for years we have had far superior rounds already being used in Marlins and winchesters.

500S&W 440gr 1625fps(handgun),1875fps(20in rifle)
450 Alaskan 500gr 2005fps-4465fpe,Ackley
50 Alaskan 453gr ABW 2015fps-4050fpe,Quickload
510 Kodiak Express 453 AGW 2323fps-5423fpe,Quickload

450 Marlin 400gr 2106fps-3934fpe
45/70 405gr 2100fpe-3925fpe
458x2 AM 400gr 2110fps-4005fpe

500 S&W COL:2.10
450 Marlin COL:2.55
45/70 COL:2.55
458x2 AM COL:2.60
450 Alaskan COL:2.79
50 Alaskan COL:2.60
510KE COL:2.68

Why build it?We already have and have had for a long time, rounds that will eat this one alive. Why bother?Just my opinion!

I like the idea of a 500 S&W in a Marlin as long as they put in a 16in. barrel non-ported with a pistol grip stock! They shouldn"t try to make in a gg.
But never get rid of the 35 REM. The worse gun deal I ever done was when in a trade my 35 Rem. went to a freind of mine .
Even though I later got a .356win. I still miss my light recoiling hard hitting .35rem. Always will; it was a peach...

Discontinue the .30-30 Winchester or the .35 Remington!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Blasphemy!

However, the more caliber choices for Leverguns we have the happier I am. So, yes I'm all for that .500 in a Levergun; just don't want to see any more of the old classic Levergun cartridges gone. After all, look what the "modernization" of rifle calibers in the mid-twentieth century did to almost all of the old classics from the late 19th century.

Just my :money: !

Hey Razmuz, what are the real --- not factory propaganda --- ballistics of the .50 S&W?
How many rounds have you chronographed?
How accurate have you found this round to be?
How many .50 S&W rounds have you fired?
How difficult is it to reload?

Keep the 35 rem, but give us a 375 JDJ chambering in the big marlin action!!

Would also love to see the 1894 in 357/44 bain and davis,

and how about the 336 in 357 Maximum?

that's all I want right now....not too much is it?

22 in. " " 2000fps.
My 45/70 gg 18.5 in. barrel 405gr. rem. 53 grs. IMR 3031 1800fps.

a 50cal. 440 gr. bullet at 1900fps. 18.5 in. barrel
VS
a .458 cal. 405gr. bullet at 1800fps. 18.5 in. barrel

How about some real lever action rounds? 44-40 or 38-40?

An extra 100fps and 35 grs. OH BOY! I'm sure the animal will be even more dead after that impact! Come on people, how much oomph is needed/ Have these animals grown armor?

Nothing personal Buckeye, I just had to use your figures you posted.

How about the .348 Win. or even the .405 Win. Either would have made 'ol Teddy Roosevelt proud.

Sheesh ... drop the .35 Remington for a round that few have fired?
How accurate is the .50 S&W?
Have any inherent problems in its reloading or firing surfaced?
How does bullet drop compare between the two?
Where will you find the proper, .50-caliber bullet?
Sheesh ... I wish people would just settle down about this round. My bet is that in a year you'll see a bunch of used ones for sale. In a few years it will be discontinued and become a collector's item.
Who cares about the damned thing? It's all hype to lure a bunch of wild-eyed, excitable jacklegs and relieve them of their money.
When will scientists find a cure for "Magnumitis?"

Amen Gatofeo. Everyone else has got big boomers and poor little S&W is feeling left out. They will probably sell a bunch of these. I was in a gun shop Saturday for about 30 minutes and I overheard 3 different people asking about it and the shop is taking orders for it of course. I can't help but wonder, however, if they would have more sales volume if they had simply come up with a good .475 or .454 instead. Folks start laughing when they see the price of the ammo (which the store already has).

Blkhawk73, a 50 cal. bullet moving a 440 gr. bullet 100fps. faster than a .458 cal. .405 gr. bullet is a big differance make light of my statement if you like .'but by your handle( blkhawk) im sure you don"t use a .357 mag. over lets say' a .44 mag. And that armor statement I dont need a gun that powerful ' " key word need " now but "want " is a differant matter!
People spend alot of time at a reload bench to try to get that extra 100fps. I have, and you too, I bet
And people have spent big money for that extra 100 fps. on custom guns and wildcat cartridges , A I models, and such.

If extra frontal area , wgt. and vel. is not inportant lets just get rid of all big bores and get 30/30's and trade in our 44 mag's and 454 cas. and get .32 's cause the animals aren't wearing armor !!! are they ??

Using the already published figures I ran them through some formulas and came up with the following:

.500 S&W

3526 Ft/Lb of Energy
119 Momentum
Taylor KO Value 59

45/70

2913 Ft/Lb Energy
104 Momentum
Taylor KO Value 47

It's only 35 grains heavier, and only 100 fps faster; but all of that adds up to a substantial increase in energy...and recoil

I think that for what most of us would use it for we would be overgunned. I can think of a few situations where the extra juice would be welcome but those would be limited in the lower 48 States

The one factor that is overwhelming is the "Gee Whiz" factor. Gotta be the first one on my block to own one and shoot it etc. I am not criticizing anyone, because the bug has bitten me more than once. I think that gun manufacturers like to capitalize on the gee whiz factor, and if it sells guns...or cars...or boats can we really blame them. Just my 2 cents. LIV

I vote for another run of the .32-20, 25-20, and the .218 Bee. I reloaded for and shot a friends .32-20, SWEET !. Wanted a .25-20 and Bee but they dried up even before Marlin announced they were discontinued !!!
PLEASE MARLIN, PLEASE !!!!

ALSO: A stainless "dark gray" with "half magazine" version in "ALL CALIBERS- BUT NO PORTS !!!!!" Also, use laminated stock for ultimate weater-proof gun ! Also ship with Reciever sight already installed, and scope base in box. And, for less than $500.00 !!!

lever action in 50S&W

And while we're adding to the wishlist: make- the triggers:3lbs,"winter" trigger guards, the safeties ambidextrous, the rifles as takedowns for easier traveling.
Despite all the hoopla about the 50S&W,I think I'll stick with the 45/70. If I want extra range I'll go with a Savage 99 in 358Win[ambidextrous safety, nice balance, easy and cheap to load].
