I have read many times about not using military 5.56 ammo in our .223 Handi's but have a question. How about using some old military FMJ 30-06 ammo in my new 30-06 Ultra Comp barrel? Also what adout using military .308 ammo in our .308 Handi's? I believe the raltionale of not using 5.56 military ammo in .223's is because the military 5.56 is loaded "hotter". It has always been my idea the military 30-06 was not loaded as "hot" as newer 30-06 sporting ammo. So, whats the scoop? Any opinions?...Thanks....<><....

My best guess is it should work OK. It was my understanding the '06 ammo was not as hot, but the 308 might be another issue altogether.

That was how they got the 308 to match/replace the '06 was by loading it much hotter.

well i always heard opinions are like butts everybody's got one.

but to get back on topic i have never fired any surplus in my 30-06 but i would think from the time the 30-06 was used it was only loaded at like 2700 FPS with a 150gr bullet i wouldn't think that it would be to hot. but maybe some of the newer stuff i don't know, but i would like to anybody else???

Just a guess here. I don't think that it is because it is too 'hot'...but rather because of the steel laquered cases...especially the ones that use a sealant around the bullet and neck. A lot of Contender shooters have had this problem before.....the cases glue themselves into the chamber and bend/or break the extractor. Most of this ammo seems to work OK in a semi-auto because it gets kicked out so fast, but in any single-shot, I don't care how fast you try to open the action..the laquered necks Hot-glue themselves in.

As for the 30-06, i'm not sure. But with such a great barrel I personally am not going to shoot it in my 06 UltraComp. I would rather see what some good factory ammo can do first then turn to reloading if nessacery.
308-I would be careful on this one. Some surplus 308 is actually loaded for machine gun purposes and are really hot producing some high pressures. If you want to go that route, try some cheap Wolf ammo.
I understand everyone wanting cheap ammo to plink and have fun with. And to that I just say wait for the 7.62x39 barrels, and enjoy.
Other than 8mm and 7.62x54R, 7.62x39 are about the cheapest centerfire rounds you can get. I can't wait for these barrels.

This has been kicked around several times...NEF says not to...try it if you want...but they have had a lot of problems with surplus ammo...

My son and I were at the range last week sighting in his new Marlin 917vs...a pretty nice little rifle, but I won't go into that here because I know I'm in the wrong forum for that. Anyway, the guy next to us sits down with his TC Encore pistol in 30-06 and gets everyone's attention when he fires his first shot. Those short, ported barrels are LOUD. He was a real friendly guy and he let us shoot it 6 times. The first 5 times we were using brass cased surplus ammo that was "Korean war era". The last shot was with either a Federal or Winchester "light magnum". The modern round was noticeably "hotter" than the "Korean war era" surplus stuff.

I would love to have one of those ported ultra comp barrels just for the effect they have on the guys next to you at the range...they have to be real attention getters.

Yea like you got my attention, now LEAVE! IMHO ported guns should NOT EVER be allowed under a roof at the range, indoors or out. Make them shoot from an uncover bench. They are flat out harmful to the hearing of the guy next to you. No matter what he is wearing.

Guess you know how I feel about them
