I've sat and thought long and hard on this, and I've decided to rechamber my .22 Hornet to .225 Winchester. My only hindering factor is the Hornet's rate of twist of 1:12", the same as the .223 barrels, if it will stablize the faster 225 Win rounds.

I did a search here, but couldn't find conclusively what the rate of twist is on NEF/H&R's 22-250 Handy's to use as a comparison against the rate of twist of the .22 Hornet and .223.

For those who dont know, the .225 Winchester is on the same playing field as the 22-250, 220 Swift and .224 Weatherby in means of velocity, but its a rimmed round which I favor(call me old fashoined).

The only things I plan to use the newly chambered 225 on is whistlepigs and coyote,....and maybe turkey at longer ranges. Well, lets not forget target shooting too.

The 22-250 standard rate of twist is 1:14".....whether H&R sticks to it, remains to be seen....I'll letcha know in a week!!

The 225 Win has more than enough velocity to stabilize a 62gr bullet in a 1-12" twist. The 225Win is right up there with the 22-250.

With the short 18" factory Hornet barrels you will not get the full benefit of all the powder the 225 uses. The best barrel length for a 225W or a 22-250 is without a doubt 26".

I would think a short Hornet barrel would be better suited for the 223. A Hornet can be chambered for the 223. You would get a brand new custom chamber, throat and lead better than most 223 run of the mill chambers.

Recamber

I recambered my 22 hornet to 219 Zipper Brass is big
problem. has to be made from 30-30 or 25-35. Best is 25-35.
Hard to find 25-35 brass. But rifle is good. changed the ejector
to a 30-30 ejector. Marv.
