I gave up on scoped contender pistols several years ago, just could not get the hang of the long eye relief scopes. Lately I've been wanting another 10" barrel. Do you think a red dot sight would work for me.

I just turned 62 and have a hard time shooting open sights. Thought I might try a red dot. Anyone with similar experience care to comment. Thanks, Byron

I too, due to my eye sight changing with age, have started to go to using red dots. I do have scopes on a couple of pistol barrels, but these I tend to shoot off of a bench. IMO it's easier to acquire the target, if out in the field shooting free hand, using a red dot sight. If shooting off a bench or a solid rest, than a scope does have it's benefits.
As to brands, I lean towards the Ultra-Dot or the Leupold Gilmore.

just my opinion,

Have a Pro point on my super 16 30-30 , It works very well . I went from the 10 x burris on this barrel just because it was so finiky on eye releif . I plan to use it for a little deer hunting this year using 125 hollow points. It is easy to shoot with both eyes open for brush hunting ,and is accurate enough to shoot at longer distance off a mono pod.

I have scopes on all my Contender pistol barrels. I am only 51 but I have had trouble seeing those darn open sights for a few years now. I use the red dots on some of my revolvers with excellent results. Some day I will probably put them on the Contenders but for now the scopes do well for me. I like the Sightron red dots. They seems to hold up well and are very clear and bright. They can usually be found for around $185. The link below is to the Sightron website and shows the model I use.

I just put a Barska red dot on my .357 MAX Encore barrel. I know it's a cheap scope, especially since I bought it on a closeout, but I will find out if I like the dot scopes.
I wear tri-focles now and just can't see the front sight anymore.

Agree - except long-term reliability is an issue and the warranty is only 1 year.

I have an ULTRADOT Red Dot sight on my T/C Encore's .454 Casull barrel and it has held up-so far-while developing loads for it and during sighting-in.

I'll be taking it boar hunting in Kalifornia in a couple of weeks and plan to use it on Javelina next February here in Arizona.
