Read recently about reduced or "Youth" hunting loads from Hodgden Powder Co. They recommend using only H 4895 and reducing max loads by 60%. Do we have any comments.....I am interested in .300Savage w/ 150grain NOS Partitions over H4895 (40grain x 60%= 24 grains). Anyone used this reduced recipe? I wrote Steve Hodgden and he said should be OK. From Hodgden's Manual..........

Hodgdon Powder Company has developed the following reduced loads for youth and beginning shooters for use on deer and similarly sized game animals. The bullets chosen were originally designed for single shot pistols and their lower velocities. These loads have been developed to closely approximate those pistol velocities in rifles, and therefore, similar performance on game animals. This provides our young and beginning shooters with loads effective to 200 yards with minimal recoil.

For all cartridges we chose H4895 because it is the slowest burning propellant that ignites uniformly at reduced charges. For years, H4895 has been the top choice by cast bullet shooters. For this type shooting, loads are reduced even more than the hunting loads listed herein. To create loads of this type for target and plinking, we recommend our 60% rule with H4895. By taking the maximum charges listed in our 27th Edition reloading manual with any given cartridge and multiplying it by 60%, the shooter can create a 1500 to 2100 fps load, depending on the bullet weight shown. This works only where H4895 is listed. Do not use H4895 in a cartridge where it has not been shown.

Call Hodgdon Powder Company if additional information is needed. Loads may be adjusted up or down to achieve best accuracy. Do not reduce by more than an additional 10%.

Accurate Powder has pulished loads for almost anything......

They have a great manual or you can go to their website. Reduced loads can be dangerous with the wrong powder and large cases. I have used their data SAFELY even with a 300 UltraMag al the way down to 2200 fps.

or 1-800-416-3006 they are in Tennessee so you will have to call them during eastern time business hours.
They have always been eager to help when I have called them, but I went and bought the book so I dont have to keep bugging them.

I suggested you look at a different load. The load you suggest is very sub par for even the 30-30 Win. Take a look at the starting load for the .300 SAV using 4895. The load you suggest looks like a crippler.

The .300 SAV starting load should not be a problem for a 90-100 pound kid to handle. Give him some padding at the bench, but he should be okay standing up.

If he is shooting a crippler you may lose him as a hunter. It could be a very distastful experience.

I think you are on the right track by wanting to take him hunting, but it needs to be a positive experience.

those loads should work fine for close in work. At the moment I am working with the 30br and aa8700 the accuracy is great with some unburnt powder left in the bore.
