My dad had an "engraved" 742 back in the day, it was the first rifle I shot. It was dead accurate and took lots of deer before he traded it in on a Ruger .44 "Deer Slayer" carbine. I still have that one.

Nice reliable rifle. If you hand load, you can get the best out of that rifle. The only downside is the trigger, Remington used a shotgun trigger in these rifles. Good news is they can be modified, I sent my son's out for modification, and it came back at a crisp, clean 3#.

I've owned several Remington and Browning semi-autos, but found myself with zero of either a few months ago. I ended up trading into a mint 1978 Remington 742 in '06 right around Christmas time. I still need to get it to the range for sight in.
