looked at a remington 700 bdl ss in .35 whelen.it had a 23 inch barrel with a fox river muzzlebreak.the tag on the rifle said it was a classic, but when did remington make a classic in stainless steel? i think the rifle is a custom shop one that has been mismarked. price is 600 with a 3x9 lighted rectical scope and redfield mounts.

jiminpa,

No, it is not a classic. And there is no such thing as a BDL SS in 35 Whelen. Remington NEVER made the .35 Whelen in the BDL SS.

I don't think it is necessarily a "custom" rifle. Perhaps someone bought a BDL SS and had it rebarreled to a .35 Whelen. I should know, I was thinking about doing the exact same thing: get a BDL SS and have it rebarreled to a .35 Whelen.

I don't know who made the barrel, but I SERIOUSLY doubt that it is Remington. Remington makes the .35 Whelen in their custom gun shop, but the barrel is not stainless. As such, the barrel that you saw could have been made from just about anyone. Best bet is to look closely at the barrel. I bet you that the name of the company must be printed on there.

As far as making it an ackley improved model, my understanding is that you would essentially have to get it rebarreled again, which should cost the same for an ackley improved version as any other cartridge.

I've had numerous rifles rechambered to the Ackley Improved cartridges and as long as the bore size is the same and the AI cartridge is not smaller than the original it is a simple matter of merely enlarging the existing chamber to fit the AI. Most all actions will need to be altered to feed without hanging up though.

Remington like most other gun makers frequently make non cataloged guns. You might never heard about them unless one just happens to turn up. I picked up one today I had no clue they had made. An R700 ADL in .257 Roberts.

The gun companies are scrabbling to sell new guns. Most of us have way more now than we'll ever have a real need for but that doesn't stop the burning desire to buy another. Their job is to fuel that desire. More and more they do that thru somewhat limited special runs of non cataloged items that some large distributor is willing to buy up the entire lot of.
