Well, I've seen some favourable reports here on the Romanian 69, but doe anyone know anything about a Russian version? I saw one this AM at my local gunshop, but didn't have much time to check it out as I was already late for work (can't tell the boss I was late because I was hanging out at the gunshop...at least, can't use that excuse TOO often....)

It looks a good bit like the Romanian, but I didn't catch the nomenclature.

TIA,

Mike

Are you talking about the One that looks like a Model 44 Rusian Mosin Nagant? Single Shot Mod 48 if you are that is a Polish gun and From what I have heard a good shooter. I prefered my Romanian 69 as it is a repeater and a excellent shooter but if you want or do not mind a single shot these guns are good ones from the imput I hav recieved. If you are talking about a different gun let me know the only other russian type 22 I have seen is a Olympic style Trainer that had a straight pull type bolt and a scope mount already attached and the crown was funnel shaped if you are talking about this gun I never shot it but saw it at the gun shop and it was a interesting gun. if it is not either or these 2 please describe it. Well, it didn't look like any M-N I've seen before. Detachable box magazine (don't know the capacity, as this shop removes them from weapons that are on display), turn bolt (not straight pull), iron sights, receiver grooved for tip off mount. Long barrel (several inches longer than the CZ that was next to it in the rack). (Lighter than the CZ, but also several hundred dollars cheaper.) Finish looked OK (I really didn't have time to do more than a cursory examination).

I will try to go back tomorrow & examine closer...maybe even bring it home!

I wonder if the Warsaw Pact nations shared designs for trainers, like they did for other arms?

Should I look for more info on the MilSurp forum?

Yea I would as I do not have any info on this I am gussing you mean "P.Bills"S" forum they might have a answer for you I would guess that if it is reasonable in price and made good go for it as the Russians made good dependable guns. Also if you wait too long it might just be bought up from under you. good luck and repost us the results or any info you get from the other forum. Jim

positive ID

Its a TOZ 17-01. Five shot detachable box mag, 20" bbl. Buttplate marked "Baikal". I assuem it was an export model since it is labeled "Made in the USSR" in English. Sights like an SKS (post front, tangent rear). Receiver, bolt & magazine serial numbers match.

Definately a different design than the Romanian.

Next weekend we'll see how well a $58.00 rifle can shoot.

I have seen that those TOZ are good shooters on some of the forums but they never said who made them so I did not know if it was russian or not. Glad to find that out. Good luck and keep us posted. Jim
