If target shooting is it, then get a single magnification,(10X,24X,6X) with adjustable parelex. This is cheaper to build than a varible power scope.
Or a high quality tatical style scope. A 6X24X40 with ajustable paralex is what I use for that on a 1950 Husky Hi-Power in 30-06.
A good scope that will take the beating of target shooting will cost at least 2-300 bucks. There are German scopes that cost $1200,so 5 bills on a Leopold is not bad for the quality of optics you get.
Bottom line: if you buy a cheap scope, when you suddenly can't even hit the paper, you'll know the internals have folded their tent & went home.
