Anyone seen any of these? Silk, or Sika Grande? Seems that they are a cross between a Sika and an Elk, developed for venison production, but would make a heck of a trophy I bet. Males up to 400# and females up to 300#.

Mark,

I know several ranches that have either silks or relks. The sika/elk and red deer/elk crosses. One is within 125 miles of Tomball. But none of the serious hunters I know hunt them because none of the ethical record scoring systems recognize them. Just as they are not reconizing the new gemsbock/scimitar horned oryx crosses that have been bred the last few years.

Hey Denvas

how was the last youth hunt? Now where is the place within 125 miiles of Tomball, and you got any idea what they would charge for a hunt for one of those large crosses? Hope to take my wife after some axis does in a few weeks. Howie knows a place in E. Tx that sounds affordable enough.

Hi Mark,

The ranch is over between Cat Spring and Bellville. I called Dr. Jensen and he does not have any for sale right now. However, he might have some shooters this fall. He will have to wait until he can get an idea of what the horns are going to look like.

Please check out my ad in the classified section. A group of us are getting together to help out a fellow shooter and scout leader. His son was recently diagnosed with a debilitating muscular disease and they have very little money for the medical bills. We have banded together to help raise some money by selling our excess muzzleloaders, knives, scopes, etc. Any help sent in that direction would be appreciated.

Take care.

That sounds like a Dybowski sika. They have these in Russia and on several Texas ranches; they are quite handsome beasts.

I know that sika will inter-breed with elk and red deer.

I talked to the folks at the Exotic Wildlife Association and the informed me that the Dybowski sika are one of the 3 recognized sub-species of sika. These are the, smallest to largest, Japanese, Manchurian/Formosan and Dybowski. The Sika Grande or Silk is a hybrid animal and is a mix based upon breeding a sika to an elk. This Silk is not always easy to distinguish from a true sika unless you are an animal biologist or do the necessary blood testing. However, the EWA did indicate that Silks are not recognized for their record book as did SCI. Charley Seals, the EWA executive director, said that to a trained animal breeder or trophy scorer there are several things that would make one question whether any given animal was a true sika or a hybrid. If someone tries to enter an animal into their record book and there is any doubt then they insist that the necessary testing be done to insure the validity of the entry.

Hey Denvas

I looked through the classified section and did not locate that thread. What title is it under? I will see if I have some things to contribute.

Mark,

It is already way back on page 5 but hee is the original posting;

A fellow shooter and hunter has a child that has had and will be having some unexpected and sudden medical costs that are beyond the means of the family involved. In an attempt to help them out several of us from our shooting club are banding together to sell off our excess muzzleloaders, scopes, knives, etc., in an effort to raise money for these medical expenses. Please take a look at what we have listed below to see if there is anything that might interest you. If so please fell free to contact us with a counter offer and we will consider it. Just keep in mind that our intent is to raise as much money as we can to help this family out in their time of need.

Denny, if it is on page 5 it will disappear soon. All ads move downward if no new posts are made to keep them up at the top. After 28 days they are deleted if no posts are made. All you have to do is made a reply to it to bring it back to top for all to see. Just mark the reply BTT for back to top and all will understand.
