Called in two from different directions; They got to fighting and after about the third bout, Killed them both (30 steps) with one shot. Not real big birds, but it was a first for me. Both had 9 to 9 1/2" beards.

VM,
Those birds must have been standing in fertilizer. I did hear of an old work buddy of mine got one 24 lb. with three beards up on the Northern Neck of Va. I need to buy me a scale. I've gotten an couple around twenty but no monsters

I just got my second bird for the year today. I had time to go weigh him in and it was 19 lb. even, 10-1/2" beard and 7/8" spurs. My buddy also got one 18 lb. -13oz about 7" beard 3/4 spurs. These are average mature bird weights for these parts.
This is just the medicene we needed before partners brothers funeral. It's amazing how the spirit of the wild can uplift ones spirit. This was the first time since we have been hunting together we both got birds. Around 10 years. We were floating on a cloud. RIP Johnny Harris you will never be forgotten.

Southern Maine is HOT. We have a permit/ lottery season with split seasons. One bearded turkey only,I got lucky and got drawn. 17 lb Jake with a 5 3/4 beard, my first Bird. Im hooked ! Ive seen roughly 30 birds since i wish i had waited longer.. We have two tagging stations in the area. As of yesterday there were 31 birds shot. 9 over 20 lbs. and one that will pust the state record at 23 lbs. Lots of these birds are in close to houses, with bird feeders that feed small birds and animals all year , that makes for some big turkeys. To bad that its close to houses but.. when you see a hog its a hog no matter where it is..

Fatcatbuster,
Congratulations on your first bird. it is addicting! Nothing like calling one in close and letting the Ol' long beard do his thing. It's heart pounding for sure!

:D We must have midgit birds here in Wisconsin or maybe the winter is hard on them. I went out today (my opening day). The toms gobbled till they flew down and then they were silent and then it started raining. I called in a tom about 9:30. They wouldn't gobble but they still come in. He was 17 lbs. Had a 10 1/2 inch beard and 7/8 spurs. The biggest I saw listed at the registration station was 24 1/2 but a lot under 20. I guess I don't know what size they are suppose to be. I"ve shot a half dozen toms and none hit 20. :?
