I recently picked up a Ilion produced 20 gauge youth model, modified fixed choke. Can steel and or hevi-shot/tungsten/bismuth loads be safely fired through this barrel? I am seeing more "non-toxic" loads available and I have some steel loads on hand. I don't want to damage what is no longer manufactured. Thank you.

I have an Ilion youth model 20 gauge fixed modified choke that I shoot steel out of with no problems. Unfortunately one of the fish and wildlife areas that I hunt requires it for everything including rabbit hunting.

My understanding is that as long as it's not a full choke designed for lead, steel does fine. I believe that manufacturers used to tell you to step down to modified when shooting steel for the same pattern results as full choke lead.

Now don't take that as gospel. . .

Generally steel patterns tighter than lead shot. Some of the charts that I have seen show it patterning closer to full out of a modified barrel. Probably need to pattern your gun to see exactly how it performs in your firearm.
