Hello all,

This is not a direr question but is one that keeps showing its head from time to time and last night it showed its head. I have not had the time to ask Dave Corbin about this and thought I would throw it out to you all first. Does anyone know what that little steel ring, about .5 inches outside diameter, by .057 inches thick, by .376 inches high, that goes inside the external punch holder on the S-Press (CSP-1) is for?

Donna, there are two sizes of external punch bases: one is about 1/2" long (this is the one for that ring), and the other is about 1" long ( this is the 'new' style, eleminating the need for the ring). I believe at one time it was felt that the ring gave just a little more side play to the punch so that it could enter the die without binding (and therefore causing possible damage to the die or the punch. There also used to be a rocker button between this punch bottom and the bottom of the punch holder body that surved a similar purpose. I notice that the new holders don't have this button, or room for it. I have MANY 'M' and 'S' external punches and punch holders and have to be carefull whether I'm using the old stile or new and not mix them. I don't think Dave Corbin has highlighted this issue. 8)

:D Talon,

I’m sure your right, because I don’t remember ever reading or hearing about the use of that steel ring but my memory is not what is use to be. Thanks you Talon, you’re a gentleman and a scholar.

Donna,in the "Rediscover Swaging", Paperback edition, 1983, pp68/69, some discussion of the reasoning is given. I suppose that now, after about 20 years of operational use, it's been found acceptable to skip the use of the washer and button, and just change the dimensions of the punch bottom and holder bottom instead. Just 2 less parts to get lost on the work bench's top.... 8)

I've got another question concerning this little ring. I'm using a S press and have been using a die set with the threaded insert captive on the punches (458 cal). I just got a smaller set of dies. My press didn't come with the little ring but when the puches are in the punch holder, they will move up and down around 3/8". Is this normal for the smaller punches or do I need the ring Donna is talking about?

3/8th" of play is OK. Take a look at the base of the external punch. They are made about 1" long nowdays... Until about 2 years ago the base was only 1/2" long, and the ring another 1/2". No need for rings with these longer bases as I understand it. Too, slightly excessive play with the CSP-II or "S press" isn't as "bad" as it was with those horizontal Mity-Mite types. The punch, hanging strait down, self aligns in the new vertical presses. 8)

Talon,

Thanks for the info. The die set is new from Corbin. I talked to Dave about it and some of the punches are new style and some are the old style. They have some left from old stock already made up. Dave is sending the ring as my press didn't come with one.
