Anyone have any experience with 9.3 mm (.366 caliber) rifles. I'm contemplating a 9.3 x 57 mm, which is the 8mm mauser necked up to .366 diameter.

Seems the 9.3 is very popular in Europe, no matter which case (57mm all the way up through the 74mm). I think the 375 is rooted deep in the american psyche, and these two calibers are pretty equal. 375/06 vs. 9.3x62, and the 375 H&H vs. 9.3x74 are relatively close both in diameter, firearm size and ballistics. Just another one of those, "why doesn't the 358 xyz sell?"

Ballistic coefficients and Sectional densities are actually higher for the 9.3 if you believe in them. I am currently trying to decide between a 9.3 and .375 JDJ, the only difference being the bullets. 9.3 is starting to make a lot of sense to me :).

As between the .375 and the .366, you're right about better SD on the .366. But as between the .366 and the .358, the advantage of SD in comparable weights goes to the .35. There are some really juicy 9.3 bullets out there, but apparently no cast bullets. IN an intermdiate length mil surp mauser, I'm torn between a 9x57 mm (using .358 bore & bullets) and the 9.3x57 mm. That's how the issue is framed for me. Not interested in contender/encore type SS guns in any of the JDJ wildcats. OK if you're into that, but I'm not.

Good luck with yours. Do keep us posted on whatever you decide to do and how it works out.

case lenght / cartridge availability

If choosing between the 9,3x57 or the 9,3x62, I would reccomend choosing the 62mm case. The 57 case is kind of "unneccesary" as it still needs a long action to work (just like the 6,5x55 - nice cartridge but oh so wrong in OAL... ever seen the 6,5 rattle around inside a modern action made for .30-06 lenght cartridges? A sad sight, I tell ya) Also there is no great chance you will find a smith having a 9,3x57 reamer on stock.
The 9,3x62 is a real nice round and will handle most needs a hunter will ever encouter exept really large game like buffalo. It might not be a stopper but it will kill most game without any problem. IMHO.

HI Balltip: I agree that in the abstract, the 62mm case is better in the 9.3mm. I have intermediate length action, however, not a 30-06 length action. That is the problem. Thanks for your input. I agree with what you say.

I.ve been kicking around the idea of having a medium bore built for my Encore. The 9.3x74R crossed my mind. Can't imagine where anything more than a 286 nosler partition at 23-2400 fps would be needed. At least not on this continent at 200 yds. or less. O.
