I took the boy out hunting last night. It was a new section of woods for us and it looked promising. There was a lot of young oak trees and lots of acorns. We walked slowly down an old tram road and saw nothing! the woods were a little damp and silent. No birds no squirrels no chip monks, NOTHING! NOT A SOUND!
It was a last minute thing and I didn't have any calls with me or I may have tied a distress call. What would you recomend in this situation.

Keep walking. If you don't find anything anywhere else on the property, give it another try next week. If you don't find anything then, start looking for a new place.

Quite honestly, I can't think of a place I've been that doesn't have squirrels.

Yeah, I'd also give it another try or 2. It sounds like a great area. You just never know from day to day sometimes.

As it gets colder, they'll get active

Sometimes they just hole up, plain, and simple. :-\

When I hit a new place, and it seems to be void of squirrels, I then start scouting very closely for sign. The easiest of course is the nests, but even more so, I look for trees where they've been feeding. If you're finding any sign, I'd come back like the others said, and try again. I've hit a new place, and seen nothing quite a few times only to come back a few more times, and realize it's one of my best hunting spots.

Heck man, even squirrels don't cooperate ALL the time...You mentioned young oaks, how about older ones with hollows for them???
Did you find cut acorns??? Give it another try...Good Luck...

I went out alone tonight to see if I could find a turkey. There are plenty of nests and I saw about 6 squirrels in one area. I just couldn't figure out why NOTHING was out yesterday! Knowledge is power, and I still have a lot to learn. ;D

Oh, most of the old growth is gone. The area looks like it got timbered out about 20 or 30 years ago. That is where the tram roads came from.
