I immediately think of .224" caliber as small, then 6mm/.243" as small, I'd place my .257" .25-06 on the border...I think of .257" as small, but on top of an '06 case it doesn't "look" small by any means! :)

So how about it?

On another outdoor forum anything less than .270 is considered a small bore.

It all depends on what your game is. .22 isn't small for varmints, but .270 is small for grizzlies, and .338 is small for elephant.

Nope this one wasn't opened for the discussion of "small game cartridges".

Folks requested a small bore forum and the person who set it up asked for a vote of 6.5 mm and under or .257" and under. Vote was almost equally split. I think the 6.5 MM and under had one extra vote more than .257 down.

Now me I have a hard time calling anything over .243" as small but for the purpose of this forum for NOW we're talking of 6.5MM bore size and smaller. IF it works out that not many discuss the 6.5 MM bore I may later change it to .257" or even .243" and under. BUT I said I'd let the users decide if 6.5MM or .257" down. Posting will determine. If it had been my idea I'd likely have limited it to either 6MM down or maybe even .224" down as there are a lot of those but am not sure the interest.

I started shooting in the 40's when I was just a boy, and for all my life "smallbore" has meant .22 rimfire. NRA Smallbore Metallic Silhouette rules permit only .22 rimfire.

It amazed me to find different definitions in this thread. :?

You might have noticed there is now a new definition of what this forum covers at the top. That's as a result of folks asking for a medium bore forum which has been added and is getting good use. Now this one is .257" and below which still stretches my personal definition but is what folks wanted.

Tiny Bore?

And at what point does it go from "Small Bore" to "Tiny Bore"? What some
of these guys are attempting is absolutely incredible. To me, my .204 is
small. The .17 is about the size in dia. as my very first one, a BB gun.
Some weren't satisfied with that and began work on .14's. Now I'm
reading about .12's, .10's, and someone who has even attempted .08
caliber -- now, that's gotta be tiny in anyone's book!!!
