I'm looking to get a barrel for my handi so my wife can deer hunt with it. I've got a .223 barrel on it and it's legal, but I think she needs a little more power. I'm thinking about a .243. What do you all think I want something that will not kick her hard.

extra barrel

The 243 is a real good choice. Three of my daughters and my wife use the 243 for white tails. The oldest daughter uses a 270. The 7mm-08 is also a good choice. It has plenty of knockdown and not much recoil. I have also added the 7.62X39 this year. You have basically a 30 caliber bullit with very little recoil. But, with range, killing power, recoil and availability of ammo, you can't beat the 243...

Talk about a can of worms , You'll get ideas from 357 mag. to 45/70 .

Alot depends on her size and the amount of recoil she is willing to handle and what range the shots will be at .

I personal don't like the 243 that much , a 30/30 , 308 or even a 270 will work well also the 44 mag would be a good choice out to about 100 yrds with little or no recoil .

Just my .02 worth :D

Yep...you will get a-lot of varying opinions...but...whichever one you get for her...make sure you put a good recoil pad on it...like a Limbsaver..or Pachmayer decelerator..and also add a nice soft cheek pad as well...if it still kicks to much...tame it down by adding some lead shot in the stock bolt hole...you can tame even the the largest hardest kicking ones down this way...using full house loads...

Now...caliber selection...anything over the 223 will be a step in the right direction...even though the 223 is adequate for close range perfect shot placement shots...and the 243 would be a logical step up from it...but...here is something you can try if you have a 270 or 30-06...let her try out some of Remingtons managed recoil loads...Everyone I've talked to in person that uses these swears by them doing just as the claim they do...and are getting pretty good accuracy from them...and around here they are having a hard time keeping them on the shelves...they work...and work great...and is a alternative for you to look at.

Only 1 problem with doing this...she might like the combination soooo--much...you might have to get another rifle :) ...but sometimes that isn't so-bad...

While I think the 44 mag is pretty good round...and the 357 is ok... but before I went that route...I would go for a good ole 30-30...the recoil isn't all that bad...and it is a great medium range whitetail round...and ammo can be had just about everywhere...

IMHO...if you do elect to go for the 243...get the 24" bull barrel...they seem to give the best accuracy...and the extra weight can be a aid in shooting off hand with it...while it's not as easy to carry for a small framed person..a pound or two shouldn't matter a whole lot..

1 type of ammo I would try for either one...is the new Federal Fusion they make it for both the 243 and the 30-30...I haven't shot any in either caliber...but Quickdtoo has in the 243...and it seems pretty accurate...I have shot it in my 30-06 Ultra-Comp and get exceptional accuracy...so..it just stands to reason the other calibers might be pretty good too...

Good Luck...:D

7MM-08........no 44 mags avaiable now, unless you just happen to run into one at a local gun shop or pawn shop. I just got a 7mm-08, 4th gun in this caliber, not too much recoil.

Well i suggest to you what i have suggested to every other person asking for a cartridge for a small framed person........the 44 mag............ It's a great cartridge and is relatively cheap to shoot. I don't think that full house loads in one with the limbsaver recoil pad would be too much for her. And if it is just add alittle weight to the stock. Since the factory is out of accessory barrels you would have the excuse to buy a whole new gun. (alright!!!!)

But if you want to send your frame in for an accessory barrel the 243 ultra barrel wouldn't be a bad choice. But you might also consider the 7mm-08. Both do exceptionally well on deer.

Get the managed recoil 270 or 30-06. I loaded some for my sons when they were young for their 30-06 and it kicked less than the 30-30 barrel on their handi.

These are good for 200yds on deer.
