I haven't ever hunted any sort of bear as I live in Australia and don't have the $$$s to participate in such a thing.
But recently I've heard a few things that sounded a tad dangerous to me and so I thought I'd run a poll on what sort of cartridge the regulars use when they hunt what I regard as a darn big and equally dangerous species of bear.
Now, I'm listing a couple of interesting ones.
If you think the lower powered ones are nuts please post or if not then post to say why you think they're o.k.
If you voted other tell us what it is.
If you haven't hunted grizzlie then post if you will but please refrain from voting as I'm trying to guage a reasonable idea of the accepted norm in grizzlie hunting circles.

I killed my first brownie with a Hornady 350 RN out of a .45-70 M98. My last grizzley took a single 200 X-bullet from my M110 .338WM.

That's a smay be, Lone Star, but the question was the choice for hunting bear, not getting lucky while deer or sheep hunting or having to defend your kill.
Everyone is free to post their opinions on what is otherwise permissable but I want their preferred bear cartridge. :D

If I ever get the chance to hunt Grizzly Bear, I will use my 338 RUM with either a 225 gr or 250 gr Nosler Partition. Either should be more than enough for a Grizzly Bear.

By “Grizzly” I take it you mean Inland Grizzly so that is why I voted for .338 caliber magnums(I prefer the .340 Weatherby myself but a .338 Win. Mag. will do nicely) but if you meant Coastal Brown Bears than nothing smaller than a .375 H&H(.375 Weatherby myself if I ever go again). Lawdog

I've used the 338WM, 45/70, and the 50 alaskan. Just depends on how open the terrain is. Regards, Byron

For me, it's a toss-up between my 338 Win. Mag. or my 358 Norma Magnum when it comes to hunting grizzlies. I'm taking my 358 Norma Mag (loaded with 225 grain Swift A-Frames) to chase Kodiak brownies next spring.

Well first if your a client you will use what the guide recomends
nothing less than a 338 im my camp. UNLESS YOU COME WITH REFERENCES. I use my 458 or my 50 Alaskan mod 71 made by bill fuller
of coopers landing. Also we are going to be shooting less than 75 yards and shooting until the bear is down and I DO MEAN WE IF YOU DO NOT ANCHOR THE BEAR in a appropriate manor of given time.
Thats about it.

All the guides I know won't take anyone with anything less than a .338 Win Mag. The prefered shot is to brake both shoulder blades first shot, to anchore the beast. Then worry about killing the bear, it lessens the chance of being eaten, or getting a bad smacking, by your prey.

A bit of hyperbole here. Grizzlies are know to not eat humans after killing them. It is extremely rare for them to do so - particularly when there are several other armed guides/hunters in the area. But they certainly can kill you.

Lone Star: Hate to burst your bubble, but we residents of Alaska know better. Tell that to the couple that got killed and eaten, on the North Slope two weeks ago.

No Grizzlies don't usually eat humans right away when they kill them. They usually drag them off and bury them. Then after they get ripe, they come back for a snack.

There was a guy named Treadwell that used to say Grizzlies don't eat people. But the Grizzlies taught him, and his girl friend different.

The fact that people are present don't always deter Grizzlies from coming in after food, or them attempting to take it away with them. I've watched Grizzlies come right into camp and grab a whole Moose carcass off the meat poles, then attempt to drag it off. Shooting into the air, yelling, and screaming, had no affect. The only thing that stopped him was a .375H&H.

I never hunted Grizz/brown bear yet but i do use a 338win.mag. on blackbear and i kind of like having the edge and upper hand mainly because I ain't built for speed or running and i'm just too old for hand to paw combat so if i was to hunt grizz/brown bear it would be a 458win for sure. Yup 5,000ft.lbs @ the muzzle I like it power arg, arg, arg just like Tim Allen on tool time you can never have enough power or gun just get in the high grass with one and i'm sure you'll see what i mean. I had a blackbear in the 6' high grass about 10' from me with my '06 the very next year i bumped up to a 444marlin and a few years later a 338win.mag. it didn't scare the bejesus out of me nor did i soil myself mainly because i liked it being on the edge flirtin with disaster. I like it one shot one kill thats it clean quick kills. BigBill

You know, you see all these shows on PBS about wildlife and they tell what the animals do and don't do. Well I and people I know can tell you it's a lot of XXXXXXXX.

First of all the pipeline does not stress the Caribou. In fact they will line up for miles to lye in the only shade on the North Slope. Under the pipeline.

Bears will hunt and eat people. A few years back a fellow was deer hunting near Juneau. This fellow was using a deer bleat to try and call in a deer. A brown Bear slipped up behind him, attacked and killed, then ate the fellow. Another incidense an Air Force officer took his wife out to a cabin for a reconcillation period (they had been having marital problems). According to the Trooper report she was killed and eaten by a bear. Everyone involved thinks he killed her, but there is no way to prove it since bears did eat the evidence.

You read lots of stories about people getting attacked by Grizzlies. Since they survived they or someone writes their story. They tell how they were attacked then the bear left, if they had not slipped out then, no doubt the bear would have returned when he got hungry. No one is left to tell or write the stories of the non survivers. The only people that hear about those are the family and friends, and the locals where the attack took place.

I dumped my motorcycle a few weeks back. I scraped my arm and was bleeding. Since I take blood thinners, the little scrape was really bleeding, so I left a blood trail back to the truck. I had left the first aid kit in the truck. While I was patching up my arm, I saw a Black Bear following the blood trail. Since it was a small bear I did not want to shoot it, even though Black Bear is open all year. I left the bloody towel and cotton balls on the rock where I had sat to fix the arm, got into the truck and drove away. I drove up the trail and stopped where I could see the spot. The bear finally got to the spot, searched all around, then ate the bloody towel and cotton balls. After that he searched around a little more then left. If I had been really hurt, or knocked out, the outcome would have been very differant.

I have no experience hunting brownies or grizzlies, but how popular is the .35 whelen out west? I've got a Rem 7400 in this caliber, and it is one of the accurate, non jamming ones...Seems to me that five rapid shots of the .35 WH would be sufficient inside of 200 yards or so. Anyone got an opinion on this?

Info for Sourdough

Sourdough,
Here is a product you may want to check out, it is called Quick Clot. I have the same problem with blood thinners that you do. I'm a retired Police Officer and that is how I learned about this Quick Clot. It is a granulated product in a foil pouch initially developed for the Military. You simply clean the wound as best you can and pour it over the wound. It stops the bleeding. I'm heading your way in the next week for a hunt and have two packages in my kit, just in case. You can find it at the following site http://www.z-medica.com/ A lot of officers I know carry a package in the armor plate panel of their ballistic vests just so it is close if the need arises. Might make your jounts afield a little safer.
