Hello,

I am looking at picking up a 4" 357 and I like the rugers 100 and 101 I guess the 101 is like a 3 3/16 but still do able and light to boot and the taurus ti tracker is the other I have looked at. mostly It will be a general purpose woods gun for when ever I don't carry a long gun. scouting and hiking. any one have any experiences with any of the 3 let me know so I can make a choice.

thanks

Go with either of the Ruger's, you won't be disappointed. :D

I have a 3" GP 100 and it is a great gun. Built solid and functions well. Replaced the wood inset grips with Hogue Monogrip. Makes it much easier for me to shoot. You can't go wrong with either.

Between the gp100, sp101, and Taurus Tracker I would say you really cant go wrong. If your going to carry it concealed and only use it in an emergency I would say the sp would be fine. But if not I would go with adjustable sights since plinking and small game hunting are the main reasons we all go woods bumming in the first place. That way you can choose your load and sight in for it, rather than finding the load it was sighted in with at the factory. Personally I would recomend the gp100. The gun almost magically handels the hottest loads with ease and points extremely well. Its also the strongest 357 made so you need not limit your practice to light loads. The gp100 came out a little late in the game when police were changing over to auto's so it doesnt have the rich history of other classic sixguns but this isnt a bad thing because it combines all the best features of the guns before it.

Security 6

Don't overlook a well cared for Ruger security 6. I have a stainless 4 incher and I shoot it about the best of all my handguns. Adding the Hogue monogrip was the best move I made. I've taken a number of rabbits and grouse with mine as well as enjoyed a lot of plinking and target practice. And I don't worry one bit about the effects of weather on it.

:cb2: My wife carries the 3" SP101 and loves it. It's pretty darn accurate as well. If I were carrying something through the woods for a long period of time, I'd rather carry the SP101 rather than the GP100, and totally forget the Taurus.

Check the state handgun laws before you buy. In WV a handgun must have a 4" barrel to hunt with. During a hunting season if you carry a handgun (not concealed with permit) it must have a 4" barrel. You may not be hunting but the CO can place you in a hunting situation.

I got my eyes on the new model blackhawk it sure is a purty thang.
I believe it has 5 inch tube so it would be a good carry gun.
