I posted on the lever action site looking for loads for a 405wcf. I got some starting loads to work with.

It appears that I've found a site with many knowledgable people. What can anybody tell me about this rifle in regards to hunting. I got this rifle from a great uncle who passed away. I do not believe that it has ever taken any game. I plan on ending that once I develope some loads for it. I am looking to take a bear or possibly a deer.

Any info will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

First of all Hornady makes cartridges for it @ about $27 per box of 20. This is a bit cheaper than what you could build less than 200 rounds for, and I doubt you'll ever shoot it more than that.
And, I believe, the lead bullet molds for it are at 300 grains( see www.buffaloarms.com for current Lyman mold for it). As for loads, see Ideal Handbook # 40 (or others in the 1930s, 40s, or 50s). Powders listed are 2400, 3031, 4320, and Unique. I wouldn't trust another's word for the exact loadings... read it for yourself! The .405 is underpowered for dangerous game( buff, Rhino, tuskers, etc), but is way overstrength for deer and blackbears. In some cases the receiver sight that may be present on your Winchester has great value as, to date, no one has reproduced another for that rifle (I think). 8)

Talon

Thanks for the info and advise. The rifle I did receive has an adjustable peep style receiver sight. It has a lever locking devices and adjustment markings on the left hand side of the receiver. It appears to be original. I did find some old Winchester Western factory rounds for the rifle. I figured I would just keep them verses burn them up at the range.

One of the April gunrags had an article on elk hunting with it both the original .405 and the recent reissue. The data listed only the Hornady 300 gr bullet at around 2200 fps.

405Win

I have a 405Win in Winchester M1895 with 28in barrel.I use 58.5 grs of IMR 3031 with 300gr Hornady for 2450fps-4000fpe.That is a max load, helped by the long barrel I have. But no signs of stress on rifle or cases.Work your way up.Good luck!

Good article Sept-Oct. Successful Hunter magazine (from Wolfe-Handloader/Rifle) by Phil Shoemaker, an Alaskan guide. Impressed with aftermarket bullets, disappointed with Hornady factory loads. Handloader has had several articles over last couple of years, two in Jun-Jul 02 issue. Might check with them for back issues. Also check Ken Water's Pet Loads on .405. He used a rebored Browning before it came out as a Winchester.
