Wow and I thought my Ruger 77-17 was bad. Well it really was but not THAT bad.

At what distance are they key holing? How badly? Totally broadside? Just a bit? How many? All or some percentage of them?

The only factory new gun I've had do this was a Taurus Model 44 in .44 Magnum with 12" barrel. Looking down the barrel it kinda looked like an old black powder rifle shot a lot and cleaned a little. Pock marked big time.

There is but one thing to do to a new barrel that spits them side ways. Ya send it back for replacement.

To be that bad they must have forgotten to rifle the barrel. How does the bore and crown look, any obvious flaws?

 

As Coastwatcher said look the crown over real good and if it's new like GB said, send it back and ask for a trigger job for free for your aggravation.

 

Or its actually a 22 mag barrel

 

My reply to your post in the Centerfire forum in case ya missed it....

Great shootin on the 45-70.....the hmr rounds remind me of a trip the range one time shooting a 7mm mauser, all rounds were keyholing, come to find out there was a bush mid range at the edge of the range causing the bullets to upset before they hit the paper. It took a bunch of shootin before we figured it out, moved over one seat at the bench and it quit doing it! If that's not the case, I'd look at the muzzle and make sure the crown looks good, have never ever seen anyone write about a hmr keyholing. Are you sure it's a .17hmr barrel and not a 22mag barrel??? I have read of an NEF rifle being built with rifling in only part of the barrel recently, worth a look.

Talked to H&R today - they said to send it in - they would fix it - no charge even though I bought it used.

Good thing I ain't done the trigger work yet !!!!!!!!

 

This company is great!!, many of us may have had problems or find fault with some things pertaining to these guns but when it comes down to it they stand behind their product....<><.... :grin:

 

Their customer service is great, I have had good luck with them in the past.I sent my sporster back the other week to be repaired.The transfer bar broke on it. I called customer service about it and asked them how much it would be to fix it,and he said there would be no charge.I have owned my sporster about 3 years, so I figured I would have to pay something.I am also having them fit a .17 HMR barrel to it while it's there.

 

you really can't beat NEF for service after the sale.

i sent them a handi that i had to put at least few thousand rounds threw it. it was my first (recent) handi and i went nuts getting extra barrels for it, so i shot 22 hornet, 357 mag, 45-70, 30-30, 30-06, and 410's for at least 3 years with it.

the firing pin broke the day after a quail hunt, it goes back to the factory and a couple of weeks later, a freshly repaired handi arrives home, no charge to boot.

i've been stuck out here in california since monday, i was hoping to go to the SHOT show in las vegas to check out the latest in home weaponry. any get out there to see the handi's ?
