Did you guys ever get that 50 Alaskan barrell?

It has to be about 5-6 years ago, the guys over at Virgin Valley sent me the first 50 Alaskan barrel that they chambered.

Mine barrell was 12" with a muzzle brake. I shot a few bears with it using 600 gr Barnes Originals.

As for a rifle barrell length, 21" should be plenty... I might tend to something a little shorter and probably just full bull. Are you going to put a muzzle brake on it? How about a barrell band front sight with an express sight?

Should be fun!

 

50 alaskan

as a matter of fact i did get a barrel from vv.21 inch ported matte finish ss.killed two deer with it this hunting season.using cast performance tech. bullets.525 grns getting 1775 fps.real glad i paid to have it ported.first scope i used was demolished by recoil during load devlopement.put on a compact nikon 2-7 seems to be working fine.i have fired about 100 rounds through it so far.had a little problem with the forearm staying attatched at first but we got that resolved.this makes a real nice package ss frame ss barrel realtree stocks and scope.if i can get it figured out i have a pic i'll post.thanks,shawn

 

What was the cause of the forearm issue and what did you do to resolve it?

I know on all of my hard kicking Bullberry and Virgin Valley barrels, I ended up silver soldering the nuts, for the hanger bar, into the dovetails. Most of them would just loosen up, the 416 Rigby and the 50 Alaskan lost their forearms in about 3 shots.

The recoil of the 50 Alaskan w/ that 600 gr Barnes max loaded (1615 fps) and no brake (threaded brake) is not a pleasant experience.

It took me about 15-20 minutes to get the feeling back in my hand. If you have ever had a ladyfinger or similar small firecracker go off in your hand as a kid, it is that same numb throb.

when i had the barrel built,to save a few bucks, i had a shotgun contour turned and since i already had a shotgun forearm i had the barrel set up with shotgun style mounting.for the shotgun they use dovetailed nuts set into the bottom of the barrel.after 8 rounds these nuts shattered leaving me holding a forearm in one hand and the rest of the rifle in the other.i had figured since it was strong enough mounting for magnum shotgun loads it would be ok for what i was doing.well anyway,it was sunday i e-mailed steve at vv.,mon. no response,so i called left a message on both steve and jeffs voice mail,no return call for like a week.i e-mailed again,nothing.in the meen time i stole the two nuts from my t/c shotgun barrel and put them in.90 or so rounds later they are still fine.
anyway after finally getting ahold of vv jeff the tech told me it was prob a hardness issue meaning the nuts where hard/brittle.ok so how about making good on it.i hadn't told them i was using the t/c nuts because for the $535 i paid for the damn barrel i wanted at least two more nuts.i was told that they would heat treat two nuts and send them to me free!wow nice guys huh.2 months later after repeated calls and e-mails i finally got them.they are now in a bag upstairs in my gun room.i replaced the ones on the shotgun barrel with 2 from t/c that i received in 4 days.i am sure that if i hadn't been persistant they{vv} would have never bothered to send them to me.so much for service after the sale.the barrel itself is great, good accuracy and it came exactly as i wanted ,just left a bad taste in my mouth about their service.sorry so long winded,shawn

 

Well, don't worry about their poor service in the future - they are effectively out of business.
