Best way to tell is see if there is a crest on the receiver ring. FN contracted to many Gov't for arms,so you can get it kinda close.

Waldyo: is it a 5.6x57mm or a 6.5x57mm. If it's a 5.6 with a custom barrel then it's way cool. If it's a FN Mauser it may well be a Model 46 or whatever they called them when they started making them again after WWII. If it's a FN then it's a 98 I believe. There are websites you can go to and determine the year your action was made. Good luck.

I have a husky 146 98 actioned rifle in 9.3x57. According to the serial number which is in the mid 20,000's it was made in 1928. However having said that I'm guessing that rifles with FN serial numbers were in different serial number ranges when they were sold to various govt's. Frank

 

The rifle concerned arrived at the LGS during the week so I managed a quick peek, the paperwork should arrive early next week so I can have a play.

Definately a belgium made 98, while not silky smooth Tikka type it feels kinda solid if not a little clunky, the trigger wasn't real flash so I ordered a Timney for it straight up. Hopefully the trigger and the scope mounts turn up fast so I can put this thing together and have a shot.

The factory ammo hasn't arrived yet but there was 29 empty once fired cases in the with the rifle, the RWS brass is certainly solid.

It's taking a little while longer to get this rifle together than I hoped, permit came thru last Thursday so I promptly collected it. Still waiting for the scope base and trigger to arrive, on the brighter side the ammo arrived that came with the rifle, WOW what an impressive looking round! Her is a 5.6x57 round next to a .222Rem, can't wait to shoot this thing!


I picked up a scope during the week, ended up going with a Meopro 6x18x50, should be a good match and enable the calibre to stretch its legs a bit.
