Pro/Mag - Archangel 98 Mauser stock questions

Has any of you guys bought a Archangel stock from Pro-mag?

Im specifically looking at the Mauser 98 version and my question is really about the proprietary magazine.

I just bought one for my brother in law for his Mini-14, and considering one for a 10/22 project as well if this one looks good as well.

I see this exact stock is also offered for the Moisen Negant rifle as well and it seems very popular. The mag carried a diff model number but "looks" to mount and function the same. Im not looking to use the Negant mag just see if its function well for its owners.

I watched a couple videos and the product seems solid enough. But it uses a removable box magazine. Im hoping I can get feedback on its function. None of the videos show or mention any feeding problems. But this is my concern.

I have been considering a scout style gun but not yet pulled the trigger. I almost did over the summer with Savages hog hunter.
Over the weekend I discovered this stock for the 98 Mauser, a rifle near and dear to me heart. The fact that I have a few that done see much day light soured the idea of making my own scout rifle out of one.

Any how, lil long winded but thanks for the time and anticipated answers.

Re: Pro/Mag 98 Mauser stock questions

CW: I've seen those in the magazines and they look sort of bulky to me and I don't care for the scope mount type doohickey they use. That's just me though.

I think you could probably do better with a inexpensive Boyd's Stock if you don't mind finishing and bedding yourself (one of the things I like to personally do with a rifle I want to hunt with, and then have it drilled and tapped for a scvope mount and bend the bolt to clear the scope.

I believe Brownells sells removable magazine conversions for the 98 Mauser and I know they have them for the 308 caliber but I don't know what else.

As for a Scout Rifle concept - I know the barrel on the 98s a tad longer than what you might find on a Scout but not that much longer or so much longer that I don't think it wouldn't work. I have a Husqvarna 98 in 8mm, a sporter (Model 46 or something) in a nice short European style stock and that is too much of a honey to leave home for anything and the extra 5" of barrel does not leave anything to be desired.

Just for the hay of it and to see if you have any accuracy at all with the old girl, try just bedding the stock to see if it improves your groups at 50 - 100 yds and if so then go the full sporterization. I would also think of a Bold Trigger as well.

Have fun and good luck. Mikey

Re: Pro/Mag 98 Mauser stock questions

The stock came today I gotta say I am happy and impressed.

The stock comes with adjustable recoil lug and a adjustable barrel tension adjustment.

Tge fit was snug but positive. The stock came with new allen stock screws and when tightened down they simply stop, As if threaded into steel snugged down and they stopped.

Took about fifteen minuted with a dremil to shape the bolt notch. The barrel is fully and generiously free floated. The stock also comes with a adjustable block that allows you to variably put tension on the bottom
Of the barrel. Some guns like a little up pressure. Stock also comes with std detachable sling studs and single point detachable sling pockets installed.

The mags load smoothly, but as you get to eight get difficult to load. The tenth round takes some finesse and lil tapping to adjust collum of bullets in the mag. But feeding is velvety smooth.

The stock feels very nice. It does have mold lines that I will remove with a sharp knife and some sand paper.

One of the best parts its USA MADE, LIFETIME WARRENTY and wears a US FLAG!

I almost forgot, it also comes with plugs for the safety notch in case you have a factory or Timney style safety.

Shooting it Sunday!

The bolt looks strange in pic...maybe just the angle.

I have a rubber boll on the knob. Simple and effective way to get a better grip. Bolt was welded on fifty years ago when this was sporterized. Its a standard of the day bolt lo mount for scope use.

I still havent shot this with this stock on. Maybe Sunday, if my feel better, Could barely walk outta the woods today!!!

I shot about 60 rounds thru it this weekend.

It handles recoil just fine. I do not find it abusive, even tho the pad isn't very "soft".

It did change things with accuracy. I had long ago worked up a 49g charge of 4064 and a 175 Sierra into sub MOA groups. now its about 1.25 at same 100 yards. So acceptable, but not what this rifle with its original (turned down) German barrel can do.
I also tried a loading of 4350 and a 1709 Semi ptd and a 150 Speer with H335. ALL shot fair. The 150 was just so slightly over 1" but at 200 it opened to nearly 6"... so me, wind or unstable bullet who knows.

I'm REALLY liking the handling with this stock. The magazines where a concern, but they feed like slick butter and so so smoothly!

I have been to the range now three times with this stock.
I am very very satisfied with the ergonomics feeling the look and finish as well as the accuracy since instal.

I may buy a second one for another Mauser build, that has been stalled for the past couple years
