Needed something to shoot while the .280II barrel was cooling, so I shot the RMEF .35 Whelen Ultra, .45-70 Handi and scoped .45-70 BC in the mean time.

Shot the 225gr TSX with 57-61.5gr of RL15, the same load as MattParliament was shooting in his 22" Whelen, never really found an accurate load, 1½" was the best I got, but I also never got any pressure signs even at 2895fps, so I'll load up some more continuing on up in ½gr increments to see where it goes. Also may have to adjust COL, these loads were the recommended .050" off the lands.

Also shot several loads in the 22" and 32" .45-70 barrels for comparisons, the highlight of that was the 350gr Hornady RN at 2027fps w/52.5gr of H322 with a nice ½" 3-shot cloverleaf in the 32" BC barrel. The next step up at 53gr chrono'd 1850fps in the 22" Handi barrel.

Another comparison was 45gr of IMR4198 and the 350gr Speer FP @ 1932fps for the 22" and 2082fps for 45.5gr in the 32".

Gee's Tim, I thought something was causing the world to tilt. You were away from the board!!! Just kidding. you are "the source" here though.
Thanks for the 45/70 info. I'll have to try some of your loads.

Being retired I get to spend a lot of time here, and being a GBO Junkie as Matt calls me, I do enjoy it. But I've been away a couple days a week since deer season opened, but not all day, just the mornings and early afternoons, need my daily GBO fix!!!! :D The regular season is over now, yesterday was it, all that's left now is late buck for 4 days in the middle of November during the rut, hopefully one of us will have a "convergence" with a buck!! ;D

I'd been putting this range trip off too long, glad I waited tho, today was nice, no crowds, all of the sight-in crowds are gone, had the range all to myself practically, there were never more that 8 shooters on the big range all day, when I left at 3pm, I was the only one there just as it was when I got there at 11am!

Thanks,

Tim

I forgot another thing I learned to today, the .240" throating I did cost me about 100fps with the H4198/300gr Nosler partition load, was 2425fps before, now it's only  2330fps in the same 22" Handi barrel. It was a bit cooler today than the previous work, but H4198 is an Extreme powder, shouldn't shoot too much different from 75 degrees to 50 degrees.

Sounds like a .25-06 Rebored to .35 Whelen would be the right choice, I just happen to have an extra one, haven't decide on what to do with it yet. A .338-06 Imp-Imp or .35 Whelen Imp-Imp, even a .375-06 Imp-Imp might be its future!! ;)

Tim did i get it right, did that 350 grain hornady bullet with 45 of IMR4198 have a 15 fps per inch difference when comparing the 22" and 32" barrels
If so thats not bad at all . and i also used to get an average of 1900 FPS with that same load in my 1895SS with a 22"
